Our heart goes out to everyone impacted by the recent storms and flooding. We are so sorry for the challenges, loss, and uncertainty so many are facing right now.

To the first responders, volunteers, and organizations working to support those affected—thank you. Your compassion, strength, and dedication are making a difference in the lives of so many during this difficult time.

Please continue to stay safe, check in on one another, and hold onto hope as communities come together to rebuild and recover. 💙 *st

We had the incredible honor of celebrating Alan Johnson at the Hawai‘i State House of Representatives, recognizing over 30 years of dedicated service to individuals and families impacted by substance use and behavioral health challenges.

Alan’s leadership has helped shape not only Hina Mauka, but the broader Windward and statewide community through advocacy, compassion, and unwavering commitment to recovery.

While this moment marks his retirement, his impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.

Mahalo, Alan, for your vision, your service, and the countless lives you’ve helped transform. 💙

History of Hina Mauka

Hina Mauka began in the late 1960’s as a group of dedicated volunteers at the Hawaii State Hospital who were committed to helping individuals struggling with alcoholism. In 1976 Hina Mauka was incorporated as a not-for-profit substance abuse treatment agency known as as The Alcoholic Rehabilitation Services of Hawaii Inc. Over the course of years, Hina Mauka has evolved in the delivery of services according to what is successful, while continually modifying our approach to be ever more effective in order to meet the needs of the community. Hina Mauka has been accredited by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) since 1999, an important measure of quality within the field of behavioral health.

Adult programs

In 1995 Hina Mauka opened adult residential services at its current Kaneohe location. Hina Mauka is licensed to provide residential services and provides a full continuum of substance abuse treatment for adults, including those with co-occurring disorders. Psychiatric services, case management, and peer mentoring is offered to adults in our Kaneohe program. Hina Mauka opened an adult outpatient clinic at Waipahu in 1997. In 2000, Hina Mauka developed a unique therapeutic community program based on traditional Hawaiian culture and values at the Women’s Community Correctional Center (WCCC) called Ke Alaula.
