As recipients of the Government Leadership Award, Senator Jarrett Keohokalole and Representative Scot Matayoshi spoke about Alan Johnson’s legacy of partnership — building bridges between care, policy, and people.
Their reflections remind us that recovery isn’t just a mission — it’s a movement shaped by those who believe in change.

Healing doesn’t happen in a straight line — and that’s okay. 🌿
Some days will feel light and full of progress.
Others may feel heavy, uncertain, or still.
Both are part of recovery — both are valid. 💙
At Hina Mauka, we remind our community that healing is not about perfection, it’s about persistence — showing up for yourself, again and again, with patience and hope.
You’re not alone on this path. Every small step forward counts.

Hina Mauka began in the late 1960’s as a group of dedicated volunteers at the Hawaii State Hospital who were committed to helping individuals struggling with alcoholism. In 1976 Hina Mauka was incorporated as a not-for-profit substance abuse treatment agency known as as The Alcoholic Rehabilitation Services of Hawaii Inc. Over the course of years, Hina Mauka has evolved in the delivery of services according to what is successful, while continually modifying our approach to be ever more effective in order to meet the needs of the community. Hina Mauka has been accredited by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) since 1999, an important measure of quality within the field of behavioral health.
Adult programs
In 1995 Hina Mauka opened adult residential services at its current Kaneohe location. Hina Mauka is licensed to provide residential services and provides a full continuum of substance abuse treatment for adults, including those with co-occurring disorders. Psychiatric services, case management, and peer mentoring is offered to adults in our Kaneohe program. Hina Mauka opened an adult outpatient clinic at Waipahu in 1997. In 2000, Hina Mauka developed a unique therapeutic community program based on traditional Hawaiian culture and values at the Women’s Community Correctional Center (WCCC) called Ke Alaula.
Teen CARE
Within the overall agency of Hina Mauka, Teen CARE focuses on services for children and adolescents. In 1987 Hina Mauka developed Hawaii’s first school-based substance abuse treatment program at Castle High School and it proved successful in the intervention and treatment of adolescents. The Teen CARE program has expanded to provide substance abuse prevention and treatment services throughout Oahu and Kauai. Teen CARE also works with children who have been displaying behavioral or emotional challenges though our Intensive In-Home program.
