At St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee, we are honored to care for patients whose stories remind us what compassionate, high quality care can achieve.
Dr. Edward S. Piatt recently shared his journey after years of persistent hip pain that gradually began limiting the active lifestyle he loved. A former athlete who stayed committed to daily walks and workouts, he eventually learned that bone spurs were causing the pain and that he would need a total anterior hip replacement.
Like many patients facing surgery, Dr. Piatt described feeling both relief at finally having answers and concern about the procedure. He shared how meaningful it was to feel informed and supported throughout the process. He credits the guidance he received from orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rajeev Puri and preoperative nurse Tonya Woods, who helped him understand what to expect before and after surgery.
Today, after 11 weeks of recovery, Dr. Piatt has completed physical therapy, walks two miles each day, has returned to working out, and continues to regain strength and mobility.
Reflecting on his experience, he shared:
"You can teach medical procedures, but you cannot teach excellence and the care for others."
We are grateful to Dr. Piatt for sharing his story and proud of the teams who help patients feel supported every step of the way.
