Winter Storm Update | North Carolina
North Carolina is under a state of emergency as freezing temperatures and icy conditions move through. Please take this seriously and plan ahead.
Road Safety
• Avoid driving if possible. Ice is often invisible, especially on bridges and shaded roads.
• If you must drive, slow down, leave extra distance, and avoid sudden braking.
• Keep a winter kit in your car: blanket, flashlight, water, snacks, and a phone charger.
Power Outage Prep
• Charge phones and backup batteries now.
• Keep flashlights accessible. Avoid candles if possible.
• Set refrigerators and freezers to the coldest setting.
Freezer Safety Tip
Before a potential outage:
Freeze a small cup of water solid, then place a coin (or quarter) on top and return it to the freezer.
– If the coin is still on top, food stayed frozen.
– If it’s halfway down, food partially thawed.
– If it’s at the bottom, food fully thawed and may not be safe to consume.
Home Safety
• Let faucets drip slightly to prevent frozen pipes.
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate.
• Never use grills or generators indoors.
Pet Safety
• Bring pets indoors whenever possible.
• Limit time outside and wipe paws after walks to remove ice melt and salt.
• Make sure pets have warm bedding, fresh water, and extra food on hand.
We’re monitoring conditions closely and will share updates if hours or operations change. Stay safe, stay warm, and check on neighbors who may need support.
