Cramping or extreme pull in the muscles is very common in a disc prolapse

The “cramping” sensation many feel in the calves or hamstrings during a disc episode is often protective muscle guarding.
The brain perceives the nerve irritation as a threat and signals the surrounding muscles to tighten to “splint” the area and prevent movement.
Attempting to “work through” these cramps with aggressive stretching or dorsiflexion can override this protective mechanism, leading to further micro-trauma at the site of the prolapse.
