Indirect Services via TeleSANE

The TeleSANE Program utilizes telemedicine to connect facility site clinicians to consultants specifically trained in caring for patients who have experienced a sexual assault. The program provides equipment, education, and guidance to providers across the state of Missouri to support a standardized care of practice. The consultants can be brought into the room with the site nurse and the patient for as much that is needed via a provided telecart. The program connects the community resources and helps build bridges to create a multi-disciplinary approach to sexual assault care. Patients can expect an evidence-based, trauma-informed medical forensic exam, connections to resources, and after-care follow-up guidance. Program Development

If your hospital or community wants to develop a forensic program, SANE Solutions and Consulting has over 13 years of experience in program development. We will provide an initial assessment and evaluation, provide all policies, procedures, medication protocols, and billing and reimbursement procedures and limitations. We will provide training to your staff, assuring competent evidence collection and integrity. We will also include a SANE kit which will provide the clinician with everything they need to complete a medical forensic examination, including male and female charts for documentation. Once your program is developed we will continue to update you on any local, state, or federal regulations to ensure your hospital remains compliant on local, state, and federal levels. SANE Training

What you need to apply for the Sexual Assault Nurse Training Certification Program

The Program is seeking applications from diverse, committed individuals looking to provide compassionate care for sexual assault patients. SANE certification requires completion of a 40 plus hour certification training program and a commitment to working as a SANE nurse for a minimum number of on-call hours. In order to prevent the person-to-person spread of COVID-19, we will be offering the didactic content for the SANE Certification Training in an on-line format, which will include recorded, self-paced sessions and scheduled, live, interactive webinars. The training will also include one on-site clinical session. We are committed to following all Covid 19 guidelines to protect students, instructors, and standardized patients, and as such, the exact dates for the training are pending. We anticipate the course will launch in July. This intensive, innovative training model will consist of live and online lectures, recorded presentations, small group breakouts, and a one day on-site clinical. Hours for training components are approximately 15 hours of recorded modules, 8 virtual live sessions (24 hours), and a one full day, on-site, clinical. Live online sessions will be no more than 3 hours per day. Clinical sessions will be scheduled in small groups, and each SANE candidate will join one session. Candidates must attend all days of the live, online training; complete all recorded modules and quizzes; participate in and demonstrate competency during the on-site clinical day. After completing a SANE preceptorship, candidates will be competent as a SANE and will work on-call providing care to adolescent (14 years and older) and adult sexual assault patients. SANE Solutions works with multiple community partners to provide diverse and high quality training. Our trainings meet the National standard requirements and the International Association of Forensic Nursing requirements. Once the didactic is satisfied you will complete an eight hour clinical day (SANE-A-PALOOZA). Please call to get training dates

How You Can Intervene Safely:
When it comes to intervening safely, remember the four Ds – direct, distract, delegate, delay.

Direct action
Call out negative behaviour, tell the person to stop or ask the victim if they are OK. Do this as a group if you can.

Distract
Interrupt, start a conversation with the perpetrator to allow their potential target to move away or have friends intervene.

Delegate
If you are too embarrassed or shy to speak out, or you don’t feel safe to do so, get someone else to step in.

Delay
If the situation is too dangerous to challenge then and there (such as there is the threat of violence or you are outnumbered) just walk away. Wait for the situation to pass then ask the victim later if they are OK.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The theme for this year is, “Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity.” In addition to utilizing this time to draw attention to the prevalence of s*xual assault and educate individuals and communities about how to prevent it, this year’s campaign calls on all individuals, communities, organizations, and institutions to change ourselves and the systems surrounding us to build racial equity and respect.
