April is Stress Awareness Month, and stress is not always just “feeling overwhelmed.”

Sometimes it looks like trouble sleeping.
Sometimes it looks like irritability.
Sometimes it looks like numbness, shutdown, brain fog, or a body that never fully relaxes.

When stress gets stuck in the nervous system, healing involves both brain and body.

At Worth It, we offer approaches like EMDR, SSP, and LENS Neurofeedback to help people move out of survival mode and onto a path of healing. Schedule an assessment if you see yourself in this list. https://bit.ly/4294vxm

Pets can make a real difference in our stress levels. They can help us feel calmer, more connected, and less alone. A walk, a cuddle, or even just their steady presence can bring comfort on hard days.

Pets are not a substitute for therapy, but they can be part of what helps us feel more grounded and safe. On National Pet Day, we want to thank our furry, feathered, and scaly companions.

Sand tray therapy for adults is an experiential, evidence-informed counseling approach that uses symbols, imagery, and sensory engagement to help clients process emotions, trauma, and life transitions. While often associated with children, sand tray therapy is increasingly used with adults who want to move beyond insight alone and access deeper emotional healing.

For adults who feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected from their emotions, or unable to fully articulate their experience, sand tray therapy offers a structured but creative way to explore the inner world safely. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3MOJy7o

When the world feels loud, it can be hard to stay informed without becoming overwhelmed. Protecting your attention helps you stay engaged in a steadier, more sustainable way.

Lowering the volume of constant inputs creates space to think, reflect, and respond thoughtfully.

Consider:

• Remove news and social apps from your home screen
• Turn off non-essential notifications
• Log out after each session instead of leaving apps open
• Charge your phone outside the bedroom at night
• Set a daily window for checking news rather than open-ended scrolling

Reducing the noise is not about disengaging from the world. It is about protecting mental space needed for understanding, reflection, and thoughtful action.

If the constant flow of information feels overwhelming, we’re here to help.

If you want to stay informed during stressful social times without feeling flooded, choose slower inputs. Instead of swiping through dozens of posts designed to produce stress and even outrage:

• Read one full article
• Follow one thoughtful long-form journalist or expert
• Listen to a full-length analysis instead of short clips
• Pause and process before opening something new
• Ask yourself: What did I actually learn?

Depth builds clarity.
Volume builds activation.

Staying engaged does not require constant exposure. It requires intention.

If constant input feels overwhelming or out of control, we’re here.

March is National Social Work Month.

At Worth It Therapy, 5 of our 7 therapists are clinical social workers. That matters.

Social workers are trained to see the whole person — not just symptoms, but relationships, nervous systems, environments, trauma history, and the systems surrounding someone’s life.

Social workers:
• Hold complex family dynamics
• Help regulate overwhelmed nervous systems
• Support trauma processing
• Navigate systems when clients feel stuck
• Maintain ethical and professional boundaries while offering deep compassion

It’s a profession built on both heart and rigor.

We are grateful for the social workers on our team and for the work happening in communities every day.

The Safe and Sound Protocol is one of the tools sometimes used to support nervous system regulation.

It works through the auditory system using specially filtered music delivered in structured sessions with a trained therapist. The goal is to gently strengthen the pathways involved in safety and social engagement.

For some people, this can:

• Reduce sensory defensiveness
• Increase tolerance for emotional work
• Make therapies like EMDR more accessible

It is not a replacement for trauma therapy but can be a supportive first step.

Healing is not one-size-fits-all. Sometimes it begins by helping the nervous system feel steady enough to go deeper. If you’re curious whether a brain + body approach could support your healing, learn more at Worth It Therapy. https://bit.ly/4rSvBUE

Some therapies focus primarily on thoughts. But, not all therapy is talk-based. Some methods help the *body* update its sense of safety.

EMDR is one example of a brain and body therapy that works with how the nervous system stores experiences. It helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they are no longer stuck in an activated state.

It does not require reliving trauma in detail.
It helps the brain integrate what has already happened.

When the nervous system shifts out of survival mode, emotional reactions often become less intense and more manageable.

Sometimes people are ready to face trauma but their nervous system becomes quickly overwhelmed.

Racing heart.
Shutdown.
Tearfulness that feels hard to control.
Exhaustion after sessions.

This does not mean therapy is failing.
It may mean the system needs more regulation capacity first.

Building nervous system stability can make the work safer and more sustainable. The Safe and Sound Protocol is one of the tools sometimes used to support nervous system regulation as a step toward EMDR or other trauma processing therapies.
