Handy Helsel’s

As the name implies, my hands are my livelihood. From creating simple greeting cards to complex quilts and children’s quiet books to the healing touch of massage, God’s gift to me is working through my hands. Growing up, I always thought I wanted to be in the health-field industry. I watched first hand the miracles of medicine, for myself and others, in both mainstream and alternative practices. College proved God had different directions for me. With a lifelong history of pulmonary issues, mixing chemicals in chemistry lab and breathing fumes in biology was just not feasible. So I got an associates degree in Interior design. Although I have not used this degree significantly in a professional manner, it proved life-saving in remodeling and remediating mold in our first house and beginning the remodeling process again in the current one. And I love it. But God also lead me down a path to reach my original heart’s desire of healing with massage therapy. I trained in a form of energy work that uses theta brain waves to work on health issues for myself and my family, but I wanted to do more with it for more people. This desire lead me to massage therapy. Before beginning my initial practice in central and southwest Kansas, I did a lot of looking for education, but as Kansas is pretty much the last holdout for state regulating, it wasn’t required and I decided I was more than capable of self-study and could spend the 10 hours of driving time every week reading text books instead. I began seeing clients in Oct of 2016. The summer of 2018 my family relocated to Kansas City and enrolled in the formal education (only an hour of driving a week!) required for the state of Missouri. I graduated in February of 2019 and passed the national exam 4 weeks later. I got my feet wet at a spa and finally found the opportunity I’d been waiting for subleasing from a chiropractor in the Brookside area of KCMO in August. My life has been quite an adventure getting here, but it has been worth it. I love working with my hands in so many ways and I finally get to share it with others on a large scale!
