Right now, your trees are telling the truth.

No leaves, no canopy cover, no hiding structural issues.

March is one of the only times all year when we can clearly see:

• Branch structure
• Crossing limbs
• Weak unions
• Deadwood
• Early signs of decline

Once leaves emerge, those problems are much harder to spot.

This isn’t about pruning for appearance, it’s about protecting long-term health and stability.

March gives us visibility we won’t have again until next winter.
Let’s use it wisely.

Winter Lawn & Tree Myth

“If it looks bad in winter, it must be damaged.”

Not necessarily.

Dormant grass browns.
Bark looks rougher.
Branches look bare and awkward.

That doesn’t mean something’s wrong... in fact, it often means things are working exactly as they should.

Winter is deceptive.
Spring tells the truth.

Did You Know?

Those warmer February days don’t always mean it’s actually warming up.

They often feel warmer because of longer daylight and a higher sun angle - not because temperatures have shifted in a lasting way.
Our eyes notice the brighter light and changing shadows before our yards do.

Visual cues change first.
Biological cues come later.

That’s why February can feel confusing - and why patience still matters this time of year.

Your yard doesn’t shut down in winter - it just changes jobs.

During National Bird-Feeding Month, we’re taking a closer look at how healthy trees and landscapes quietly support birds and wildlife all winter long.

It’s not just about feeders - it’s about habitat.

By mid-February, most of the U.S. has already gained about 45–50 minutes of daylight since the winter solstice.

You may not feel it yet - but your trees do.
Longer days mean slow, subtle shifts underground as roots begin preparing for spring.

Winter isn’t over.
But the light is coming back.

Presidents’ Day Thought...

Great leaders have a few things in common:
Strong foundations.
Long-term thinking.
And patience.

Healthy trees work the same way.

Also, our trees don't care if it’s a federal holiday.

Happy Presidents’ Day from the Martz Bros team.

February Weather: What’s Normal (Even If It Feels Weird)

A few Midwest facts worth knowing as winter grinds on:
• February is often colder on average than December
• The biggest temperature swings of winter usually happen now — freeze → thaw → freeze
• “False spring” warm-ups are common, but rarely last
• Snow totals may drop compared to January, but ice events are more likely

These swings matter. Rapid temperature changes stress trees, compact soil, and impact root systems long before we see it above ground. Winter may feel unpredictable — but the patterns aren’t.

This is the season where patience and proper tree care make all the difference come spring.

February is National Bird-Feeding Month
Birds rely on healthy trees and landscapes for shelter, nesting, and food - especially in winter. When your trees are strong, your yard becomes more than a lawn… it becomes habitat.

Feeding birds now helps them survive the cold months, while proper tree care helps ensure they’ll have a safe place to return to come spring. Strong roots. Healthy canopies. Living landscapes.

It’s all connected - and it all starts with taking care of what’s growing in your yard.

Groundhog Day Forecast: Pending.
Punxsutawney Phil did his thing today - shadow or no shadow, winter isn’t done with Kansas City just yet.

Whether spring’s teasing us or winter’s hanging on, this is the stretch where lawns and trees rest, reset, and get ready for what’s next. Nature’s doing its quiet work underground… even if it doesn’t feel like it yet.

Six more weeks or early spring - what’s your call?

A quiet January fact worth knowing:

Even on warmer winter days, soil temperatures change much more slowly than air temperatures.

That’s why a random 55° afternoon doesn’t mean growth has started - or that anything needs action yet.

The calendar moves first.
The ground follows later.
