Exceptional care isn’t defined by a single moment or clinical experience alone, but by the compassion, consistency, and teamwork our 48,000 caregivers bring to every interaction from check-in to end of life care and every point in between.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce that our enterprise parent organization, BJC Health System, is now BJC Health—because every moment deserves exceptional care.

Saint Luke's has been part of the Kansas City community for more than 140 years, and we're not going anywhere. As we step forward into an exciting new era as one, united system, we'll continue to provide expert, compassionate care as the Saint Luke's team you know and trust.

Our Saint Luke's kidney transplant team had a wonderful day at the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Walk, where they advocated for patients living with kidney disease and honored the lifesaving gift of organ donations from deceased and living donors.

Since completing the region’s first kidney transplant in 1969, Saint Luke’s has remained a trusted leader in organ transplantation across the Midwest with nearly 3,000 kidney transplants performed and significantly shorter wait times for kidney transplants compared to the national average.

When Monica began looking for a new primary care doctor, she turned to someone she trusted—Dr. Lisa DiStefano with Saint Luke’s Primary Care–Southridge. As a nurse, Monica was used to being hands-on with her own care, but Dr. DiStefano took the lead.

Dr. DiStefano created a care plan that included a mammogram. Monica couldn’t recall her last screening, but she knew she was due—and Dr. DiStefano stressed that she complete it before anything else. The mammogram revealed a small spot on Monica’s right breast.

“I would never have gotten a mammogram if it weren’t for Dr. DiStefano,” Monica said. “She made me get the mammogram, and it saved my life.”

An ultrasound and biopsy confirmed an 11 mm invasive ductal carcinoma, which would continue to grow if left untreated. Because it was caught early, the tumor hadn’t spread. Dr. Elizabeth Butler, a breast surgical oncologist with Saint Luke’s Surgical Specialists, was able to remove the tumor, along with two lymph nodes.

Monica is deeply grateful for the support of her care team.

“I’ve had all these wonderful people who have helped me make choices and been there for me,” she said. “I felt like I had this whole team behind me, along with my family.”

Monica recently completed five days of radiation with Dr. Zachary Nicholas, a radiation oncologist with Saint Luke's Radiation Oncology Specialists. She celebrated by ringing the cancer-free bell surrounded by her care team and family.

Now, she encourages others to be proactive about their health and undergo regular screenings, reminding everyone that early detection can make all the difference. 🩷

Ten years after her stem cell transplant, Nancy, 73, thought her hardest battles were behind her. When her cancer unexpectedly returned, she found hope in an innovative solution through the oncology experts at Saint Luke's Cancer Institute.

Nancy was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and underwent chemotherapy and radiation. Years later, in 2014, she faced a new challenge with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After relapsing, she received a stem cell transplant—a treatment that gave her a second chance at life.

But Nancy’s resilience would be tested again. In 2023, she was diagnosed with stage 4 congestive heart failure, a condition so advanced that she required a heart pump device. In 2024, doctors discovered cancerous nodes around her pancreas. With her heart too fragile for chemotherapy, Nancy turned to Saint Luke’s for its renowned research and innovative cancer treatments.

Nancy met with Dr. Furha Cossor, Saint Luke’s hematology oncologist, who recommended a groundbreaking immunotherapy that uses the body’s immune system to target and eliminate cancer cells.

Nancy began treatment in November 2024, which consisted of weekly infusions for 12 weeks, then biweekly. Now, she receives monthly infusions for life.

Nancy's cancer is currently in remission.

Nancy can enjoy these extra years she’s been given thanks to the support of donors like you. Help us continue to find ways to extend patients’ lives: https://heyor.ca/iauJMM

When breast cancer patients undergo a mastectomy, it is important to have options for breast reconstruction.

“Breast reconstruction after a mastectomy is a very personal decision made with the guidance of your physician, ensuring you feel informed and supported every step of the way,” said Dr. Thuan Nguyen, a Saint Luke’s plastic surgeon. “It can either be tissue-based or implant-based. Women can also choose not to have reconstruction with the option of wearing an external breast prosthetic.”

Tissue-based reconstruction restores the breasts using tissue transferred from other parts of the body, while the more common implant-based reconstruction uses silicone implants that come in different shapes and sizes.

“Sometimes we can place the permanent implant at the same time as the mastectomy,” said Dr. Nguyen. “In other patients, we start with a tissue expander and inflate it slowly over the course of several weeks to stretch out the skin, then add the implant later. We now have up to 1,445 cc-sized implants, allowing larger-breasted women to regain their pre-mastectomy size.”

The Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 generally requires insurance plans that cover mastectomy to also cover breast reconstruction surgery. But, no matter the patient’s decision, the multidisciplinary team from Saint Luke's Cancer Institute and Saint Luke’s Plastic Surgery Specialists are there to help guide them from diagnosis through treatment to survivorship.

With every newborn child whom Saint Luke's joyously helps bring into the world, we also remember the babies who couldn't stay.

In honor of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City invited everyone in the hospital to honor a baby by writing their name on a crane or butterfly and placing it on this tree in front of the chapel, provided by March of Dimes NICU Family Support®.

"Spiritual care providers provide immediate grief support to families leading up to and following the loss of a baby," said Kristin, a Saint Luke's chaplain. "Families can honor their child through a Naming Ceremony, in which they speak the child's name and proclaim the impact of this life, no matter how brief it may be. We endeavor to acknowledge parenthood, parents' pride in creating this life, and the enormity of their loss."

Let every branch be a reflection of remembrance and hope.

Precious, a medical assistant at Saint Luke's Cancer Institute brings both professional dedication and personal compassion to her work with breast cancer patients. For nearly two years, she’s helped patients navigate their treatment journey with empathy and hope.

Her passion for health care stems from her own childhood experiences. When she was just two years old, Precious was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The care and kindness she received from her medical team inspired her to give back.

“My social worker, doctor, and nurses all took really good care of me,” Precious said. “I wanted to give back what I had when I was going through treatment. That’s what made me interested in oncology.”

For Precious, the best part of her work is building genuine connections with breast cancer patients and helping to reduce their stress so they can focus on their healing.

“I wish more women knew how important it is to be proactive about their breast health with regular self-exams, knowing their family history, and not ignoring any changes or symptoms,” Precious said. “Early detection can really save lives. Staying informed and acting when something isn’t right is vital.”

This , we celebrate Precious for her compassion and dedication to her patients. 🩷

Chaplains like Christyn provide a special kind of care—not for the body or mind, but for the soul.

Saint Luke's chaplains support individuals from every faith background, even those who don't have a particular faith. When a Saint Luke’s patient or family member needs spiritual care, a chaplain is always available to talk. Christyn has been a chaplain at Saint Luke's East Hospital for 15 years.

“There are more ways to feel spiritual than just going to church,” says Christyn.

Christyn describes chaplaincy as the liaison between patients and their care teams. She visits patient rooms every day to ask how they’re doing and will stay as long as they need. Chaplains are also present in many emergency situations to offer spiritual and emotional support for families.

“I’ll come sit with them and help them process what they’re feeling, give them resources, or whatever we can do to clear their mind and make good choices that are aligned with their faith, whatever faith that may be," said Christyn. "We're all people at the end of the day, and that's the beautiful part. I get to be their advocate."

It’s a cozy afternoon in Vern’s Pub at Saint Luke’s Bishop Spencer Place, where residents Carol, 96, and Jean, 95, share laughter like the lifelong friends they are. Their bond began in 1932, when Jean attended Carol’s second birthday party. From there, childhood adventures turned into a friendship that would span nearly a century.

They spent summers at a Michigan camp, later followed their love of history to Vassar College, and even traveled abroad together—adventures they now look back on fondly.

After college, Carol married, asking Jean to be her maid of honor, while Jean became active in the Junior League. As they raised families, holiday gatherings and weekend visits kept them connected, and their children became friends, too.

In 2006, Carol moved to Bishop Spencer Place with her husband. To her delight, she soon discovered a familiar face right across the hall.

“It was a pleasure to see Jean again,” Carol said. “I moved into one of the apartments across the hall from her, so it’s just like we’re neighbors again after all the years.”

Reflecting on their many years together, Carol and Jean admit the secret to an enduring friendship is less about the time you spend together and more about the space you hold for each other.

“We never drifted apart,” Carol says. “When Jean moved in, it was like we were kids again. We played bridge together, our husbands were in the investment club together, and we had dinner together. It just felt like old times.”

We were delighted to welcome Elise Gagliardi Art to our gallery recently.

Elise is a fine art photographer who works with both digital and film cameras. She focuses on flowers, creating striking botanical still lifes. Her asymmetrical compositions evoke movement, and her use of shadows and natural light mirrors the styles of 16th- to 18th-century European painting.

We thank Elise for sharing her talent and bringing such beauty to our gallery. 🌸
