In our community, Black families continue to face higher risks during pregnancy and birth due to systemic barriers, gaps in access, and inequities in care. These outcomes are not inevitable. They are preventable.

Black Maternal Health Week is a time to recognize both the urgency and the opportunity to do better for Black mothers and babies.

At Nurture KC, we’re working every day to change this through our Healthy Start program and advocacy that improves outcomes for families. From connecting moms to care and resources to providing doula support, education, and transportation, we meet families where they are so they can thrive.

Real change takes all of us.

We’re proud to share that two of our Healthy Start moms have been selected to represent Missouri and Kansas in the ZERO TO THREE Strolling Thunder Project.

Through this national initiative, families are trained to speak with lawmakers and will travel to Washington, DC to share their personal experiences with Congress—helping drive policy change on issues like child care, early learning, health, mental health, and economic stability, while highlighting the importance of support for families.

Ellysia Dunn, a current Healthy Start participant, will represent Missouri. A mom of two young daughters and a student pursuing her degree in Criminal Justice and Criminology, Ellysia also serves as Community Consortium Co-Chair, representing families with lived experience.

Davinya Hinojosa, a Healthy Start graduate, will represent Kansas. A dedicated mother of five and active community member, Davinya is passionate about early intervention and the programs that support families like hers.

We’re honored to support them as they help shape policies that impact families across the country.
