Diverse donors 🌍 + blood drives 🩸 = a perfect match for kids! 💞

Kids who are diagnosed with sickle cell disease need regular blood transfusions, and having donors from many backgrounds helps ensure better matches for patients.

Today, we celebrated Sheena Anderson, who was this year’s Community Blood Center Dr. Charles Drew Lifesaver Award recipient. Dr. Drew was an African American who is considered the father of modern blood banking.

Sheena’s son Bam receives care at Children’s Mercy for sickle cell disease. Together, they are increasing awareness and blood donation within Black and Brown communities across the region.

Congratulations, Sheena! Honor her work by finding a Community Blood Center donation location near you: https://cmkc.link/4cevv5k

6,000 mirrors. 8 pounds of glitter. 9,000 jewels… at Children’s Mercy? But where, oh where?

Look up the next time you walk through the rotunda at our Adele Hall Campus Main Lobby and you’ll see a little love in the air... literally! Since 2003, the “Spirit of the Heart” mobile, sparkling with thousands of mirrors and jewels, has been lifting the spirits of kids, families and team members at Children’s Mercy.

Commissioned by beloved philanthropic friends and long-time champions of Children’s Mercy, Donald and Adele Hall, in memory of two cherished children of former board member Roshann Parris, this dazzling flock of bejeweled birds was brought to life by artist Chris Duh. Each shimmering bird reflects the courage, joy and individuality of the children we care for — and honors the children whose spirits continue to inspire us every day.

The spirit of this artwork continues through our Wings of Love fund, which supports our bereavement program for families coping with the loss of a child. If you feel moved to honor these families or the memory of a child, you can learn more or make a gift here: https://cmkc.link/4rHupnq

Sometimes, the most meaningful friendships come with four paws. 🐾💙

Barrett’s journey with Children’s Mercy started before he ever entered the world. During pregnancy, his mom, Ashley, learned her baby would be born with Down syndrome and a rare heart condition. In August 2025, she delivered at the Elizabeth J. Ferrell Fetal Health Center, beginning what has become a long hospital stay for their family.

Since then, Children’s Mercy has felt like a second home—first in the NICU, then transitioning to the Cardiac ICU in November following Barrett’s heart surgery. Today, Barrett is navigating liver dysfunction and working toward a liver transplant.

Six months in the hospital brings plenty of challenges, but it’s also brought an unexpected source of comfort: Litta. 🐶

While Barrett’s family misses their 2-year-old chocolate Labrador waiting at home, Litta helps fill that space with love, laughter and familiarity. “Labs are the best dogs!” Ashley shared. “They’re so loving and so silly. Litta has been there for us on some of our hardest days and gives us a little piece of home. We are so grateful for her and Jill, her handler—more than they’ll ever know.”

💙 Last night, the KCTV5 News Kansas City tower shone blue for Maddie—and for Angelman syndrome awareness. Maddie is a joyful, determined 7‑year‑old who loves fruit snacks, being in the middle of the action and playing with her siblings. Though she’s nonverbal, she communicates in countless ways and continues to defy expectations every day.

Inspired by Maddie and other local families, her parents helped launch the Angelman Syndrome Clinic at Children’s Mercy so kids across the region can access specialized care close to home. Lighting the tower blue is a symbol of hope, progress and a future where every family has the support they deserve. 💙
