Are you familiar with internalized ableism?

"Ableism is discrimination in favor of non-disabled and neurotypical people. People with ableist assumptions and beliefs wrongly assume that everyone should look, act, and think the same wayโ€“ a non-disabled or neurotypical way. Differences are seen as deficits and defects, which leads to the discrimination and subjugation of neurodivergent and other unique people."

Today's A Mighty Girl Community Pick: "Girls Who Build: Inspiring Curiosity and Confidence to Make Anything Possible." This empowering guide for girls celebrates the can-do attitude of fierce girls who know how to wield a hammer, fire up a saw, and build everything from a bookshelf to a playhouse! After being the only woman on countless construction sites, carpenter Katie Hughes decided to get more girls excited about building. She started teaching classes for pre-teen girls, showing them how to drill, saw, and weld, and eventually founded her own non-profit organization, Girls Build. Now, in this colorful, photo-filled guide, Hughes features pictures and stories from 45 of her Girls Build alumni, with each girl sharing what she loves about building, what inspires her to keep creating, and what advice she'd have for other budding girl builders. The guide is also packed with tool guides, building tips, and safety techniques, as well as a list of 13 projects to give girls an easy way to get started. This empowering book is sure to inspire young DIY-ers to pick up their tools and build something great! Highly recommended for ages 8 to 13.

"Girls Who Build" is available at https://www.amightygirl.com/girls-who-build

For an excellent guide for teen girls (and adult women), we recommend "Girls Garage: How to Use Any Tool" - filled with 175 illustrated tool guides - for ages 13 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/girls-garage

To get her started on real-life building, we recommend the Build-Your-Own Wooden Birdhouse for ages 4 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/created-by-me-birdhouse) and the 3-Pocket Tool Belt for ages 10 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/3-pocket-tool-belt)

๐Ÿ“šโœจ Weโ€™re thrilled to announce the return of Lead to Read KC's author visits for 2025-26! These four amazing local childrenโ€™s authors will bring interactive read-alouds to our partner schools โ€” focusing on not just literacy, but mental health and wellness.

Nikiyah Crosdale, The Thought Jar โ€” Encourages positive thinking and equips students to turn their thoughts into meaningful actions.

Chris Goode, Ruby Jeanโ€™s Garden โ€” A story rooted in healthy living and honoring oneโ€™s legacy, with vibrant connections to community wellness.

Kristen Heath, Weโ€™re All Weird! โ€” Inspires inclusivity, kindness and authentic self-expression among children.

Author Vladimir Sainte, It Will Be Okay / Just Like a Hero โ€” Tackles topics like anxiety, bullying, and negative self-talk and reminds kids they are the heroes of their own stories.

We believe that fostering literacy and emotional wellness goes hand-in-hand โ€” because students who feel supported learn better, engage deeper, and thrive. Learn more at leadtoreadkc.org/author-partnerships.

Some good news on this Friday! We're thrilled that the state of Kansas today issued FULL benefit payments for SNAP recipients for November! The state took this action after a federal judge ruled yesterday that the federal government should issue full payments. We're still waiting to hear about Missouri, but hope we'll hear about those payments soon! We're grateful to everyone who has stepped up to help during this time. We still need support as federal employees are still out of work and the holidays are approaching for all.
