It’s been a journey 🤪

👻 Pelvic floor therapy doesn’t have to be spooky — especially when play is part of the plan!

At Unconstipated Kids, we use play-based techniques to help kids connect with their bodies in ways that feel safe, fun, and empowering. Whether we’re blowing bubbles for breath work, balancing for posture, or moving to support digestion — play helps kids build trust, confidence, and lasting progress.

Because when therapy feels like play, kids are more engaged… and their bodies are more relaxed and ready to learn. 💪🎈

😮‍💨 Breathing alone can be significantly helpful in improving toileting challenges.

Diaphragmatic breathing gives your child’s body the chance to allow “rest and digest” to be the driver of state regulation 🚙

With true diaphragmatic breathing, pelvic floor musculature can relax, lengthen, and allow the pelvic floor to practice resting in a neutral state, instead of tense.

When “rest and digest” is driving your child’s body’s state, a higher ratio of blood is shunted to the abdominal cavity, optimizing functions of abdominal organs, like digestion.

What actually happens in pediatric pelvic floor therapy? 🤔

It’s not just exercises — sessions can include breath work, pelvic floor relaxation, hip strengthening, coordination, and yes… plenty of laughter. ✨

Our goal is to help kids feel confident, comfortable, and in control of their bodies — all while keeping therapy engaging and playful. 💪💛

If your child struggles with constipation, frequent accidents, or potty anxiety, pelvic floor therapy might be the missing piece.

Can emotions affect a child’s ability to toilet in a healthy way? Prevent leaks and potty train well? 🧐

YES!! And here’s why!

1️⃣ Upregulated nervous system = tension in various muscle groups

2️⃣ Tension can occur in the pelvic floor, which then affects bowel and bladder sensation, emptying abilities, and leaks and continence.

3️⃣ Pelvic floor muscles that are tense don’t allow full emptying, leading to retention, p*e leaks, and going to the bathroom all the time.

‼️Does any of this sound like your child? ‼️

🗣 An AMAZING new team member has joined Unconstipated Kids! 🎉 She is in the process of onboarding, and is gearing up to open her schedule to start seeing kiddos officially January 2024.

🎉 Meet Erica! 💕

She is an occupational therapist who graduated from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2020 and has worked in pediatrics since the start of her career. Over the last several years, she has lived in Kansas, Wyoming, Colorado, and Arkansas, but this born and raised Texan couldn’t stay away for long. Originally from the Houston area, she has found her way back home—with her husband and new baby in tow! Erica has a passion for pelvic health across the lifespan and clinical experience in sensory processing, primitive reflex integration, and neurodiverse-affirming care. She is so excited to join the Unconstipated Kids team and integrate the worlds of pediatrics and pelvic health.

Erica finds immense joy in spending time with her friends and family, but don’t be surprised if you catch her listening to a podcast, reading a book, or trying out a new fitness class in the community. She has a deep love for coffee, which fuels her energy and enthusiasm in her day to day life. 🌟 Improving your Child's Toileting Skills with OT! 🧡

When it comes to pediatric toileting dysfunction, Occupational Therapists (OTs) play a vital role in some kids' treatment paths! 🦸‍♀️ Their unique approach can make a world of difference for your child. Here's why you might want to consider an OT on your team:

1) Primitive Reflex Integration: 🔄
OTs often have in depth knowledge of primitive reflexes. These reflexes can sometimes dominate children's movement patterns, making simple tasks more challenging. By integrating these reflexes, OTs empower your child with better control over their movements which allows toileting mechanics to improve.

2) Sensory Regulation: 🧠
Sensory sensitivities can be a hurdle in a child's toileting journey. OTs understand the intricacies of sensory regulation. They acknowledge where a child might be struggling to regulate during their daily life, address and support sensitivities, and use strategies to ensure your child feels comfortable during toileting experiences.

3) Neuro-Diverse Affirming Care: 🌟
Your child is unique and an OT gets that. They provide neuro-diverse affirming care, meaning they tailor their approach to your child's specific needs. OTs focus not just on physical aspects but also on the emotional components of toileting. They help your child navigate the complexities of feeling good and successful within their own body experience. 🤗

While Pediatric Physical Therapists (PTs) are equally equipped with the knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pelvic health, OTs and PTs can offer different specialty areas. An occupational therapist's emphasis on activities of daily living, emotions, and overall well-being can create a holistic approach to ensure your child thrives in their toileting journey.

So, whether you're considering an OT, a PT, or a combination of both, remember that the goal is the same: to support your child on their path to toileting success. 🌟
