The holidays can bring out the best in us… and sometimes the stress in us.
Family gatherings, financial pressure, travel, jam-packed schedules.
It’s completely normal for couples to feel overwhelmed.
And when that happens, healthy communication is one of the strongest tools you can use to support your relationship this season.
Here are some simple ways to reduce tension, set expectations together, and stay connected even when the holiday chaos hits.
1️⃣ Plan Expectations Early
Talk through:
🗣 Which events you’ll attend
🗣 How much time you’ll spend with each side of the family
🗣 What matters most to each of you
2️⃣ Set a Budget Together
Money stress peaks during the holidays. Choose a spending limit you both feel comfortable with for: gifts, travel, and events.
3️⃣ Use “We” Language
Shift from “you always…” to “how can we work through this together?”
4️⃣ Protect Your Traditions (and Create New Ones)
Discuss which traditions feel meaningful and which feel draining.
It’s okay to modify or skip traditions that no longer serve you.
5️⃣ Take Breaks When Tension Rises
It’s okay to pause a heated moment.
If the holidays bring up stress, conflict, or communication challenges, couples therapy can help.
We’re here to support you with compassionate, judgment-free care.
