One of the best pieces of advice I heard recently is to visit the gym at the exact time you plan to work out. That’s when you’ll experience the real environment, the people, and the energy. A place can feel very different at 6 AM than it does at 6 PM.

Ask if you can try a day pass before signing anything long-term. You should feel confident in your decision, not locked into it. Also, make sure the cancellation process is simple and clear—life changes, and flexibility matters.

Location is another big factor. If you’re planning to work out after work, choose somewhere close to your job so traffic doesn’t become an excuse. If mornings are your thing, closer to home may make more sense.

Most importantly, find a place that gives you community and accountability. The right gym should push you just a little outside your comfort zone while still making you feel supported.

Consistency always beats intensity. A gym you’ll actually go to three times a week is far more valuable than one you join with big intentions and rarely visit.

Keith has been in business for over 20 years. BONA Fitness started back in 2000 with a simple but powerful idea: build a place where people could grow stronger based on their natural ability, without feeling intimidated by a typical gym environment. What began as a small studio designed to help personal trainers build their businesses eventually expanded into a full-service fitness facility in Katy in 2012.

Before opening the gym, Keith was actually an engineer. But after experiencing a downturn in the oil and gas industry, he made the decision to pursue something he had been passionate about for years—helping people live healthier, stronger lives. With about $30,000 in savings and a vision he had been journaling and planning, he took the leap and built Bona Fitness from the ground up.
