Ok, , count me in on this challenge. This is my raw, real moment after my first birth. After a long, unmedicated birth plus a postpartum hemorrhage, I was beat. My sweet doula, Whitney snapped this photo about an hour postpartum. My loving husband comforting me ♥️Never in my life had I felt so tired, happy and proud of myself in my life. Actually it wasn’t until I was a doula myself did I realize how close to an emergency c-section I really was. We dealt with heart decels, meconium, SROM over 24 hours and a significant postpartum hemorrhage. I had the most amazing midwife who I trusted my life with. So grateful to her for staying with me the entire time and truly supporting me through the whole process.

Placenta

This magical organ is incredible. The average placenta is 9 inches across, about 1 inch thick, and typically weighs just over 1 pound. Blood from both mom and baby pass through the placenta but never mix. At full term, about 20 ounces of mom’s blood passes through the placenta every minute.

Partner support ♥️

After your baby is born, your uterus is still contracting down close to it's pre-pregnancy size. Ni**le stimulation through breastfeeding and skin to skin help your uterus to continue to contract to aide with this.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don't worry, even though it can be uncomfortable, it is nothing as intense as it was during labor. Plus, you have precious new baby to hold during them! This makes them slightly easier to endure.

Electric Fetal Monitoring

This is one of the ways baby is monitored during labor. There are two monitors, one for monitoring baby's heart rate and the other is to track contractions. This helps your provider have a better idea of how baby is moving through labor.

You are always free to discuss with your provider options to have intermittent monitoring as long as you do not have an epidural.

White, thick and cheesy looking, vernix is magic. It is natures moisturizer and protects baby's skin. It helps regulate body temperature and when rubbed into skin, rather than washed off, helps with breastfeeding.
