Thomas Beard’s sculptures have made a lasting impact in Olathe, Kansas, and beyond.

“His sculptures are displayed all over the world – Canada, England, Germany and Japan,” says Cathy Bell, administrative assistant at Good Samaritan Society – Olathe.

After a lifetime of creating, the 98-year-old now lives at Good Samaritan Society – Olathe and has fond memories of creating life-size sculptures that honor others.

Good Samaritan Society - St. Vincent's recently honored Director of Nursing Services, Kathy, for 38 years of service at Good Samaritan.

Kathy has a gift for making everyone feel seen and heard, and she has left a lasting impact on every community she’s touched across North Dakota. She continues to care for residents, build meaningful relationships with families, and mentor colleagues with compassion and wisdom.

Fred Pitzl, administrator at Good Samaritan Society - Olathe celebrated two employees with Guardian Angel recognition at a special gathering in October:

🔹 Larry DeLong, director of dining services. He shared, “Larry is modeling the way for his team. He’s customer-oriented and does all he can to meet the various needs of our residents. He’s the leader the dining services department has been looking for.”

🔹 Raphael Mutua, certified medical assistant. Fred shared, “Raphael is Mr. Consistent. He truly cares about our residents and is living out the values of service and humility.”

But the celebration didn’t stop there — Fred was surprised with his own Guardian Angel award by Whitney Smail, director of nursing services. “Fred leads with a servant heart,” said Whitney. “He’s our calm through the storm, always putting residents and staff first.”

You might have mixed emotions if your loved one is moving to a senior living community.

How do you overcome feelings of guilt, sadness and grief?

The Bible frequently says not to fear, worry or be anxious, and that advice is important as you support an aging loved one.

“Jesus says if God can take care of all the flowers in the field and the birds of the air, he can take care of us, too. Psalm 27 is another good one that says, the Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? I don’t need to fear anything,” says the Rev. Philip “Phil” McGarvey, a chaplain at Good Samaritan Society – Loveland Village.
