Kearney FertilityCare Services I work with women and couples who don't want to be on hormonal birth control, but would like to be able to space their children or avoid pregnancy.

I give them the knowledge and tools to understand their bodies and track their fertility.

Why should you care about your cycle? It's a matter of health - now and in the long term.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Healthy hormones are critical for optimal health.🙌⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Healthy hormones come from a cycle that produces adequate levels of estrogen leading up to ovulation and then significant amounts of progesterone for 12-14 days after ovulation. After that time, she gets a period. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
These 2 key players, estrogen and progesterone, are essential in doing the following in the female body: ⠀⁣
🔹stimulate brain cell⠀⁣
🔹tone blood vessels and tissues⠀⁣
🔹increase bone density and muscle⠀⁣
🔹promote well-being and relaxation⠀⁣
🔹stimulate and regulate cell growth⠀⁣
🔹regulate menstrual cycle.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Regular ovulation with the natural rise and fall of estrogen and progesterone will LOWER your lifetime risk of:⠀⁣
👎breast cancer⠀⁣
👎endometrial cancer⠀⁣
👎diabetes⠀⁣
👎cardiovascular disease⠀⁣
👎high blood pressure⠀⁣
👎infertility⠀⁣
👎osteoporosis⠀⁣

Those seem like good enough reasons to me to celebrate your period! 🥳🥰⠀⁣
⠀⁣
I covered all this in my newest blog post PLUS how to make sure your hormones are healthy.⠀⁣

If you have cramping or period pain, you're not alone. 45-93% of women have some degree of menstrual cramping!⁣😳

Pain with menstruation is called dysmenorrhea and is most often caused by hormone imbalance, inflammation and/or endometriosis.⁣

All women who have painful periods deserve to get treatment that will heal her body and cycles so she can live the life she wants.⁣❤

Tomorrow, my email list will get a special video from a Restorative Medicine Nurse Practitioner, Laura Ducote, listing exactly what symptoms warrant seeking medical help. ⁣

🔸Both girls had their first periods at age 13.
🔸Both began having severe menstrual cramping as teens -- pain that forced them to miss school and interrupted their lives.
🔸Both saw their doctors and both were offered the birth control pill to help take control of the pain.

This is where their stories take different paths.⁣

One girl began taking the pill at age 15 and the other girl did not. ⁣

👩🏽‍The girl who started taking the pill continued to use it for the next 20 years until she and her new husband wanted to start a family. After 2 years of not conceiving and her symptoms returning, it became clear that her body needed healing. She came to me to learn to chart her cycle and I referred her to a doctor trained in Restorative Reproductive Medicine. She learned she had mild endometriosis, a blocked fallopian tube and low thyroid function. She received treatment to heal those conditions and though her symptoms feel better, she and her husband have yet to conceive. ⁣

👱‍♀️The girl who chose not to take the birth control pill relied on high doses of ibuprofen and sheer grit to live through her severe cramping. She was a savvy young lady though, and when she entered co⁣llege, she began looking for a natural and effective way to heal her body that didn’t involve hormonal contraception. She too came to me to learn to chart her cycle and I referred her to the same doctor trained in Restorative Reproductive Medicine. She learned she had endometriosis and hormone imbalances. She too received treatment to heal these conditions and her symptoms improved dramatically.

The best part of this 2nd girl’s story is that she married her high school sweetheart right out of college and they had their first baby 2 years later!

My desire is for all girls and women who have painful periods to choose the path of the 2nd girl -- to get treatment that will heal her body and cycles so she can live the life she wants.⁣

❓What is cycle charting?❓ It's making simple daily observations about your body and recording it on a paper chart or electronic app. ⠀⁣
🩺When you look at all the days together, you see your whole menstrual cycle at once and several cycles together to see the patterns that emerge. ⠀⁣
🩺You can decide if those patterns are normal or not. ⠀⁣
🩺This means that if she has heavy bleeding, cramping, PMS or irregular cycles, clues about what’s causing it will show up in her chart.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Plus, when things like illness, stress, exercise and diet changes are affecting your health, you’ll see the change in your charting. Pretty cool, right?😎⠀⁣
⠀⁣
🔴Let me be clear: EVERY WOMAN AND GIRL can and should learn how to chart her cycle!⠀⁣
It will help any woman ⠀⁣
🔶to understand and appreciate her body (rather than dread her period and feel confused by her body)⠀⁣
🔶she can monitor her cycle as it settles into a regular rhythm⠀⁣
🔶notify her if there is something concerning that needs medical attention⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Above is what a basic cycle looks like charted out.👆⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Next week, I’ll explain more about cycle charting, especially for teens/tweens:⠀⁣
🔹What body observations would she make?⠀⁣
🔹What an unhealthy cycle means for her health?⠀⁣
🔹What method of charting do I recommend for girls?⠀⁣
⠀⁣
I'll cover this topic in detail in my next 2 weekly emails. Click to get this in your inbox Thursday: ⠀⁣https://bit.ly/GetSimpleGirlParentingTips

Your daughter's (and your own) menstrual cycle is a .🩺 That means it’s just as important as your heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure and respiratory rate in measuring and monitoring how well your body is functioning.🧬🌡📈❤️⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Yes, monitoring your menstrual cycle lets you monitor your overall health! ⁣

A woman’s (from the beginning of one period to the beginning of the next period) has well-established normal parameters and your cycle will change in response to your overall health. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
❓Why don’t doctors try to assess our cycles then?❓ ⁣
I don’t have a good answer other than cycle charting simply is not well known or taught in schools. Here’s what the American Academy of Pediatrics has to say though:⠀⁣
⠀⁣
🔹"Once young females begin menstruating, evaluation of the menstrual cycle should be included with an assessment of the other vital signs. By including this information with the other vital signs, clinicians emphasize the important role of menstrual patterns in reflecting overall health status."🔹⠀⁣
⠀⁣
💬You may ask: I track when my period starts - what more can I do to monitor my cycle?"⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Great question!🤔 ⠀⁣
💜Ever heard of cycle charting? You may be super familiar with it or only heard of the term. ⠀⁣

It's a lifelong skill some women never learn. How have you taken better care of yourself lately? And just as importantly, how are teaching your daughters to take care of themselves?⠀

I've been focusing on sleep for myself - I know I'll get sick if I don't get enough. And I've been helping my daughter learn to listen to her body - eat when she's hungry and stop when she's full.⠀☺️
