Colon hydrotherapyâwhat it is, where it may help, and why itâs being discussed more for people on GLP-1 medications like Ozempic or Wegovy.
Colon hydrotherapy, also called colonic irrigation, involves gently infusing warm, filtered water into the colon to help stimulate bowel movements and clear stool from the large intestine.
Now, why is this relevant?
GLP-1 medications work in part by slowing gastric emptying and digestion. Thatâs helpful for blood sugar control and appetiteâbut it can also lead to one of the most common side effects: constipation.
For some people, that constipation becomes persistent. They may experience:
⢠Bloating
⢠Infrequent bowel movements
⢠A feeling of incomplete elimination
This is where colon hydrotherapy sometimes comes into the conversation.
Potential benefits people report include:
⢠Temporary relief from constipation
⢠Reduced bloating
⢠A feeling of âresetâ in bowel patterns
The mechanism is fairly straightforwardâit may stimulate peristalsis (the natural movement of the intestines) and help remove impacted stool.
However, itâs important to be balanced here:
Colon hydrotherapy is not considered a first-line or medically necessary treatment for constipation, although, in my humble opinion, it would be nice if it was.
Colon hydrotherapy used to be in most hospitals until the turn of the century in the advent of laxatives and surgeries.
I have been a colon Hydrotherapist for over 18 years now and been able to bear witness to a lot of healing with some people juicing THC and healing different kinds of cancers through raw food and juicing. Simply amazing. I know for my own first Colonic it took me six months to get in and have one. I went kicking and screaming, but I was so sick at the time. I had lost 45 pounds in seven months. My life was spinning out of control. I woke up every day feeling like I drank five margaritas the night before, without any of the fun. When I finally did try colon hydrotherapy, for a day and a half I felt ânormalâ and then the toxic feeling would come back. I finally left the school that I was teaching at and within 12 days. All my symptoms disappeared, but that first Colonic sent me on a trajectory into natural health.
Not a trajectory I had ever been on before. Within a year of leaving the school that I worked out and becoming a colon Hydrotherapist I had developed stage four non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2008. Colonics have been a part of my journey beyond healing from Cancer and having to deal with the aftermath of having to do chemo as well to knock back this very aggressive cancer.
For individuals on GLP-1 medications who are already:
⢠Hydrating well
⢠Eating adequate fiber
⢠Using magnesium or gentle laxatives if needed
⢠Supporting gut motility with movement
âŚand still struggling with stubborn constipation, colon hydrotherapy may be considered as an occasional supportive toolânot a primary solution.
Key takeaway:
Think of colon hydrotherapy as a short-term relief strategy, not a cure. The real goal is restoring healthy, consistent bowel function through diet, hydration, nervous system balance, and gut motility support.
