Is your child a late talker? Here’s what you need to know!
By 18 months, toddlers should be saying at least 10 words (🌱milestone), and by age 2, they should have at least 50 words (🌱milestone) and start combining two words together (like “want cookie” or “more juice”).
🌱 Milestones are the bare minimum your toddler should be saying—90% of toddlers are at or above this level.
🗣️ 18 months – Milestone: At least 10 words | ⭐Average: ~50 words
🗣️ 24 months – Milestone: At least 50 words & mainly using 2-word phrases | ⭐Average: ~300 words
🗣️ 36 months – Milestone: At least 250 words, mainly using 3-word sentences & mostly understood by caregivers | ⭐Average: 1,000+ words
If your child isn’t meeting milestones, that’s a red flag for a language delay and a great reason to get them evaluated. If they’re below the average, they might just be on the slower end of typical development—but early support can still make a huge difference in building strong communication skills.
Once they fall too far behind, it becomes 10x harder to catch up. If you're unsure, it's always better to get checked early.
