A Clean Home is a Safe Home!

We wanted to share something that many of us might overlook when it comes to caregiving: the power of a tidy home.

A clean, organized space isn’t just nice to look at—it’s essential for health, safety, and peace of mind. At Milestones Home Care our light housekeeping services are designed to support independence while keeping homes safe and stress-free for those who need a little extra help.

We proudly serve:
Seniors who want to age safely and gracefully at home
Expectant mothers: who could use a helping hand during and after pregnancy
Veterans: who’ve served us and deserve exceptional care in return

Our services include:
✅ Decluttering & organizing (less clutter, less risk of falls!)
✅ Sweeping, dusting & vacuuming (breathe easier, live cleaner)
✅ Laundry & linen changes (because fresh sheets matter!)
✅ Basic home maintenance (the little things that make a big impact)

A little cleaning goes a long way when it comes to safety and quality of life.

Why choose Milestones Home Care?
We’re local, compassionate, and committed to **personalized, dignified care**—just like we’d want for our own families. Your loved one’s comfort and safety is our top priority.

If this sounds like something your family could benefit from, I’d love to chat or share more.

FALL PREVENTION

Loose rugs and frayed carpets are major tripping hazards, especially for those with shuffling gaits or who use walking aids. Even small rugs can catch a foot and cause a serious fall.

Here's how to ensure your rugs and carpets are safe:
📍Remove Loose Rugs: The safest option for many areas, especially high-traffic ones, is to remove all small, loose rugs. If they are purely decorative, consider whether the risk outweighs the aesthetic benefit.
📍Use Non-Slip Backing: For rugs that must remain in place, use non-slip rubber backing or double-sided tape to secure them firmly to the floor. Ensure the backing covers the entire rug.
📍Check for Frayed Edges: Regularly inspect carpets and larger area rugs for frayed edges or tears. These can catch feet or wheelchairs. Repair or replace them as needed.
📍Thresholds: Ensure all thresholds between rooms are low profile and securely attached. Smooth transitions prevent tripping.

Action Step: Walk over every rug and carpet in your home. Does anything shift or slide?
Address it immediately by adding a non-slip backing, or consider removing the rug.

FALL PREVENTION

Adequate lighting is crucial for preventing falls, especially for older adults whose vision may be changing. Dimly lit areas can hide hazards and make it difficult to navigate safely.

Here’s how to brighten your home effectively:
📍 Ensure All Areas Are Well-Lit: Pay special attention to hallways, staircases, bathrooms, and entryways. Use brighter bulbs where needed, opting for LED lights which provide good illumination and are energy-efficient.
📍Nightlights: Install nightlights in bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways to provide a clear path for nighttime trips. Motion-activated nightlights can be particularly helpful.
📍Accessible Light Switches: Make sure light switches are easy to reach at the entry and exit of every room. Consider glow-in-the-dark or larger switches for better visibility and ease of use.
📍Reduce Glare: While bright light is good, too much glare can be disorienting. Use lamps with shades to diffuse light and position lights to avoid direct glare into the eyes.
📍 Open the Curtains and Blinds: Maximize natural light during the day.

Action Step:
Walk through your home at different times of day and night. Are there any dark spots?
Add or adjust lighting until all pathways are clearly visible.

FALL PREVENTION

One of the simplest ways to prevent falls is to ensure clear, unobstructed paths throughout your home. Look for items that could easily cause a trip or stumble, especially in frequently used areas.

Here are some common culprits and how to address them:
📍 Loose Cords and Wires: Secure all electrical cords and telephone wires away from walking paths. Use cord covers, electrical tape, or furniture clips to keep them tidy against walls or under rugs.
📍 Magazines, Books, and Shoes: Make sure these items are stored on shelves, in baskets, or in designated areas, not on the floor where they can be tripped over.
📍 Small Furniture and Ottomans: Arrange furniture so there are wide, clear pathways. If an ottoman or small table isn't essential for a particular area, consider moving it.
📍 Pet Toys and Bowls: Keep pet items in a specific spot and put toys away when not in use.

Action Steps:
Walk through each room of your home, imagining you have limited vision or mobility.
What obstacles do you see?
Remove them immediately!

DFW!! The thaw has finally begun! While it’s tempting to rush outside the moment you see the sun hitting the icicles, the transition from a deep freeze to a melt can actually be one of the trickiest times for mobility and safety.

At Milestones Homecare, we want to make sure your first steps back outside are steady ones.

Navigating the Thaw Safely
👉 Watch for "Black Ice": Just because the sidewalk looks wet doesn't mean it isn't frozen. Shaded areas and bridges often stay icy long after the sun comes out.
👉Take "Penguin Steps": If you must go out, keep your center of gravity over your front leg and take short, shuffling steps.
👉 Clear Paths Carefully: If you’re clearing slush off a porch or walkway, remember that wet snow is much heavier than powder. Take frequent breaks and don't overexert yourself.

We’re glad the worst of the blast is behind us, but please continue to take it slow. Your safety is our priority. For any assistance or to discuss how our team can help you or a loved one stay safe at home, give us a call.

Staying safe during an Arctic Blast is about more than just turning up the thermostat—it's about proactive care and connection. At Milestones Homecare, your well-being is our heartbeat. Whether you're cozying up by the fire or just trying to keep the draft out, here is how to navigate the freeze safely:

3 Tips for Staying Safe at Home
👉 Seal the Warmth: Use heavy curtains or even rolled-up towels at the base of doors and windows to prevent heat loss.
👉 Fuel Your Body: Eat warm, high-energy meals and stay hydrated. Proper nutrition helps your body regulate its internal temperature more effectively.
👉 The Buddy System: If you live alone, set up a "check-in" schedule with a neighbor or family member. A quick morning and evening text can make all the difference.

Please keep warm and stay indoors as much as possible. For all your homecare needs or to learn how we can support your family during this season, speak to our dedicated intake team today.
