Play can add joy to life, relieve stress, supercharge learning, and connect you to others and the world around you. 🛝

Play can also make work more productive and pleasurable. Success at work doesn’t depend on the amount of time you work; it depends upon the quality of your work. 💛 And the quality of your work is highly dependent on your well-being.

When you play, you engage the creative side of your brain and silence your “inner editor”, the psychological barrier that censors your thoughts and ideas. ✍️ This can often help you see the problem in a new light and think up fresh, creative solutions.

✔ Here are some tips for creating opportunities to play in adulthood:

🎲 Host a regular game night with friends or family.
⛳️ Arrange time out with work colleagues: miniature golf, pickleball, karaoke, hiking, cooking contests, etc.
🥏 Schedule time to play disc golf or practice yoga!
🐶 Play with a pet. Puppies make very willing playmates. If you don’t have your own, volunteer at your local animal shelter!
🤪 Surround yourself with playful people. They’ll help loosen you up and are more likely to support your efforts to play and have fun.
👧 If you have small children, play and be silly with them!

You can often find Dr. A. and the rest of us playing board games, racquetball, and pickleball! We love finding fun ways to connect as a family. After all, the family that plays board games together stays together… even if they fight over whether a ball was “in” or “out”.

You’ve been asked to come to an event next weekend. You don’t have anything going on during the exact time frame proposed to you, but you don’t really want to go because the rest of your week is so busy. However, you tend to be a people pleaser and don’t want to disappoint anyone by saying “No.” So without too much thought, you say “… Sure! I’ll be there.”

📸 Flash forward to 1-2 hours before the event 📸

You realize you’re too burned out from your busy week and still have things to catch up on, so you make the decision to cancel.

Alternatively, you force yourself to go to the event and end up so tired and behind on other responsibilities that you either don’t make it to another obligation or aren’t able to participate in it to the best of your ability.

🔔In either outcome, all you’ve done is postpone the awkwardness or disappointment that you were trying to avoid in the very beginning.🔔

In many cases, it would be better for everyone if you simply said “Sorry, I can’t.”

If you can practice saying “No”, you will be so much more present and energized for everything you say “Yes” to. ✅ Being the trusted, reliable person you want to be will not become a reality until you learn to manage your time wisely.

There are times we should sacrifice our comfort for the sake of others, but we must also let go of any savior complex we have and manage our time wisely—also for the sake of others. If it’s really about loving others rather than preserving ourselves, finding a proper balance will come a little more naturally. ⚖️

If managing your health has been difficult because of people pleasing habits or poor time management, ask our office how a wellness program could be the right solution.

🎃 We’re not daring anyone to come to the office dressed like this for Halloween… all we’re saying is “Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery” (Dwight Shrute). 🎃

🔥 If you are an athlete experiencing soreness and inflammation, is your first instinct to reach for NSAIDS (non steroidal anti-inflammatories) to ease the pain and recover? 🔥

💡 Research shows that 60% of runners used NSAIDS during training and recovery. Unfortunately, this medication can mask signs of injury and hinder performance.

Soreness is normal, but it can cause inflammation. Muscle soreness associated with exercise—known as delayed onset muscle soreness—is a result of inflammation from muscle metabolism. 💪

The by-product of soreness from a strenuous workout is the tearing of microscopic holes in our muscles. After the workout, your body will begin to rebuild and strengthen its muscles. 😮 The immune system responds to these micro tears by flooding the overworked area with inflammatory cells.

🚨 Some evidence also suggests that while ibuprofen might help to ease aches and pains, it could also interfere with your body's normal routine of run/heal/repeat. 🚨

For one thing, the drug may hamper your kidneys' ability to clear out the by-products of your body's healing process, potentially leading to a buildup of oxidative stress. It could also erase some of the training benefits that happen as a result of going through the natural adaptive process.

🪴 If you need help managing soreness naturally as you rise to meet your health goals, ask our office how we can help!
