Steven "Roy" LeRoy Ziesmer

Steven “Roy” LeRoy Ziesmer, 86, of Osburn, ID, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on February 15, 2026 at Shoshone Medical Center in Kellogg, ID. Roy was born in Coeur d'Alene Idaho in 1939 to Ben and Ruth (Poulton) Ziesmer. He spent most of his life living on and caring for his family property on Coeur d'Alene Mountain.

Roy proudly served in the United States Army before he became a truck driver and sawmill worker, among other things, and retired from the Idaho Department of Transportation. He worked hard and enjoyed the outdoors, especially the wildlife that often visited his property, his "pets" as he often called them.

His door was always open and his home filled with love and comfort for his family. A visit with Roy usually consisted of a good story or two and a cup of coffee, which was always hot, black and ready. He was quick with a smile and a clever joke.

Roy was very proud of his 3 children, Daniel (Wendy) Ziesmer, Rick (Corrine) Ziesmer, and Carleen Boland. He enjoyed being "Grandpa" to his 5 grandchildren and his 7 great grandchildren - watching them play on his property was a great joy for him.

He enjoyed his Papa Murphy's pizza, ice cream, his never-ending cup of coffee and watching Nascar. Roy's laughter and the twinkle in his eye will be greatly missed.

Rest easy, Dad - until we see you again.

At Roy’s request, no services are planned at this time.

Memories of Roy and messages of condolence may be shared online with his family at www.shoshonefuneralservice.com. Shoshone Funeral Services of the Silver Valley is caring for the Ziesmer family.

David Oliver Autio, Jr.

David “Dave” Oliver Autio, Jr. 77, of Mullan, Idaho, passed away peacefully at his home on February 12, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous year long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Dave was born April 22, 1948, in Wallace, Idaho, to the late David “Casey” Autio, Sr. and Lulu May (Krause) Autio. He was raised and educated in Mullan and graduated from Mullan High School with the Class of 1966. He later attended North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene, where he played shortstop and third base for the Cardinals. After a year of college he enlisted in the Army Reserves proudly serving his country. He completed his basic and advanced infantry training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He returned home in 1968 and was assigned to the 391st Engineers Battalion based in Wallace. He was honorably discharged in 1973.

On August 12, 1967, Dave married his childhood sweetheart, Ellen Louise Durfee, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Mullan. Together they built a life centered on love, faith, family, and community, and were blessed with two daughters, Marla and Natalie.

Dave briefly worked at the Lucky Friday Mine before beginning what would become a 39½-year career with the Idaho Department of Transportation. Rising to the position of Maintenance Foreman, he took great pride in his work and responsibilities. He was instrumental in assisting with the engineering aspects of the I-90 project over Lookout Pass. Dave retired after nearly four decades of dedicated service.

Dave’s devotion to the Mullan community was evident throughout his life. He served more than 32 years on the Mullan School Board, volunteered over 10 years as a firefighter and EMT with the Mullan Volunteer Fire Department, and served 4 years as a commissioner for Shoshone County Fire District 3. He was a previous member of the Mullan Community Foundation, volunteered at the Captain John Mullan Museum, served on the board of the Mullan Youth Center, and was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Dave also for a time, was a member of the Wallace Elks Lodge and proudly participated in the Wallace Elks Drum and Bugle Corps.

To know Dave was to know his love of sports. His passion began at just five years old when he served as bat boy for the local Mullan town baseball team, coached by his father and scorekept by his sister. He played baseball throughout his childhood and teenage years. At age 15, he tried out for the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball farm team with a group of Silver Valley Babe Ruth players. He always said they only seemed to be looking for pitchers. In high school, he played on the 1965 Mullan basketball team that won the state championship — a title unmatched since. For over 30 years, Dave coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball in Mullan, long enough to coach his younger brother-in-laws and eventually his own grandsons, one of the great joys of his life. He coached Mullan YBL when Natalie was a child. He ran the score clock for Mullan football and basketball games for more than three decades and played softball for many years. A proud self-proclaimed #1 Los Angeles Dodgers fan and devoted Gonzaga basketball supporter, he rarely missed a game.

Above all, Dave loved his family. He was deeply involved in the lives of his grandchildren and took great pride in helping raise them. Over the years, he formed countless friendships throughout Mullan and the Silver Valley. His steady presence, servant’s heart, and unwavering commitment to his hometown will be profoundly missed. Dave loved Mullan — and Mullan loved him.

In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ellen, who passed away August 31, 2016, and by his sister, Carol Autio.

He is survived by his daughters, Marla (James) Trogden of Mullan and Natalie (Ross) Farrell of St. Maries; three grandchildren, Riley (Karmen) Trogden, Alex Trogden, and Grace Farrell; his sister, Louella Irvine of Pinehurst; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Dave’s memory to the Mullan School District or to the Dale Noordam Flag and Flower fund through the Mullan City Hall.

Dave’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to everyone at the Beacon Cancer Clinic, Loving Care and More, Mountain Valley of Cascadia Health and Rehabilitation, and the Shoshone Cancer Support Corporation for the compassionate care provided during his battle with pancreatic cancer. Your kindness and dedication will never be forgotten.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 28, at 12:00 noon at the Mullan Athletic Pavilion, 300 Earle Street, Mullan, Idaho. A reception will follow at the Morning Club in Mullan. To celebrate Dave’s life, attendees are encouraged to wear purple and white or “Dodger Blue” in his honor.

Joanne Ruth Monteith

Joanne Ruth (Bickerstaff) Monteith, born May 12, 1934, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed peacefully on November 11, 2025, surrounded by the family she cherished so deeply.

Joanne spent her early childhood in Cataldo, Idaho, attending Canyon Elementary School until the age of eleven. It was there, in those formative school years, that she met the love of her life, Robert William “Bobby” Monteith—a connection that would shape her entire life. After graduating from Moxee High School in the Yakima Valley, she continued her education at Whitworth College (now Whitworth University) in Spokane, Washington, majoring in Elementary Education. During her time at Whitworth, she was reunited with Bobby, her first and only true boyfriend. Their lifelong love story continued as they married shortly after her graduation and began building their life together in North Idaho.

Joanne devoted most of her teaching career to the Kellogg Joint School District, where she had the privilege of returning to her alma mater, Canyon Elementary, as an educator. She also taught at Pinehurst Elementary School, touching countless young lives with her patience, warmth, and unwavering belief in the value of education.

Alongside Bob, Joanne served her family, church and community faithfully for many years, sharing their gifts of music and ministry. Her life was rich with creativity and service—teaching, singing, sewing, baking, canning, and countless other pursuits that brought her joy and blessed those around her. Most importantly was her love for Jesus. Everything she did was done out of love and devotion for Him.

Joanne wore many hats during her lifetime, as well as many names of endearment of which you may not be aware. We called her Mama, Grandma, Jo-Jo, Auntie Jo, Great Grandma Joanne, Dorothy, Mable and Mrs. Monteith. No matter what hat she was wearing moment-to-moment or the name she was living out, we know one thing for certain; she was loved, she was respected, and she was the proverbial Salt of the Earth. She will be sorely missed and greatly remembered.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Lee W. and Ruth W. Bickerstaff, her beloved husband, Robert W. Monteith, and her daughter, Susan Lynn Monteith.

She is survived by her brothers John D. Bickerstaff (wife Kay) and William Bickerstaff (wife Jan), brother-in-law Don Spellmen; her children Cheryl Stueckle (husband Doug), Richard Monteith (wife Diane), and Linda Davis (husband Darrin); and a large, loving family of grandchildren: Anne Marie, Jonathan (Rebecca), Andrea (Mark), Nathan (Rebekah), Ashleigh, Angela, Joshua (Tonisha), Allicia (Lance), Erin (Woody), Christen (TJ), Amie (Mitchell), John (Cora), and Ryan. She also leaves behind many great-grandchildren—Aurora, Sylas, Kira, David, Ismael, Eliana, Theo, Jonathan, Wendell, Ryder, Rowan, Sunny, James, Malachi, Naomi, Amelia, Evelyn, Ronan, Liam, Layne, Eli, Jadyn, Alethea, Makiah, Oliver, Emberly, Macie, and Carson—each one a bright thread in the tapestry of her legacy. Joanne is also survived by dearly loved nieces and nephews: Todd (Patty), Kari, Bob, Chad (Michelle), Ray, Rob, Tina (Byron), Tricia (Sean), and Sara.

A celebration of Joanne’s life will be held at Canyon Elementary School on May 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Canyon Elementary—either monetary gifts, back packs or much needed school supplies—in honor of the place that shaped Joanne’s early years and later became the heart of her teaching career.

**Donations will be accepted in person at the time of Joanne’s memorial. Thank you in advance for your generosity in honor of our dear, sweet Mama (Mrs. Monteith).

Memories of Joanne and messages of condolence may be shared online with her family at www.shoshonefuneralservice.com. Shoshone Funeral Services of the Silver Valley is assisting with arrangements.
