Puffin Chiropractic Welcome to Puffin Chiropractic! We look forward to assisting you. Dr. Hawkins was born and raised in Ogden, UT where he enjoyed the outdoor life.

He frequently involved himself with skiing, camping, fishing, and a multitude of other outdoor activities; which is the attraction to living in a diverse land as Alaska. He chose to relocate to Texas, where he finished two years of undergraduate work in only one year and then attended chiropractic college. He obtained a B.S. Human Biology and a Doctorate of Chiropractic from Texas Chiropractic College. During his internship, he practiced as clinician for the Rice University Sports, the University of Houston at Clear Lake, El Centro Medical Center and the Bridge Over Troubled Waters rotation programs. With these rotations he received experience treating collegiate athletes, individuals ranging in ages 18-80, low-income community and victims with a history of abuse or battery; in effort to keep all patients mobile and healthy. Bragging rights: Dr. Hawkins is confident in his adjusting skills, his ability to diagnose and treat patients and is always looking to educate the patient to improved health.

Make Your Home Workstation Work: don't forget to stretch and move!
Take Breaks Every 20 minutes:
-stand up and move your legs up and down as if you are walking in place
-look at an object that is more than 20 feet away for about 20 seconds
-gently shake your hands, wrists and elbows for a few seconds while also rolling your shoulders up, back and down
-take a slow, deep breath to improve your posture and smile, then slowly exhale
-sit down, refreshed. You are now ready to get back to work for 20 more minutes

Are you waking up with a stiff neck, headaches or feeling ill-rested?

Pillow Selection:

To avoid neck and upper back pain from improper neck support:
- Select a pillow that will hold your head in a neutral position while sleeping on your side or back.
- Avoid excessively thick or multiple pillows.
- Choose a fiberfill or feather/down pillow as these are usually better than foam.
- Consider a commercially available pillow that promotes good neck posture.

No one pillow works for every person, we all have different sized heads, shoulders and backs. Ask you chiropractor for the best type pillow advise based on your most consistent sleeping position and body-frame.

Entering & Exiting a Vehicle
Entering and exiting your vehicle is a potential risky activity for low back pain sufferers. Follow these tips to limit problems:

- To enter the vehicle, open the door and stand with your back to the seat, legs close to the side of the vehicle. For larger vehicles, you may wish to begin by standing on the running board. Place your hands on the door and door frame to keep your movements slow and controlled then slowly lower your body into the vehicle.
- Tuck your head into the vehicle. Keep your knees close to each other, as though they have been taped together, brace your abdomen as though you are about to be punched in the stomach and pivot your body as a whole without twisting or bending at the waist. You may grasp the steering wheel with your right hand to help you pivot.
- Use a lumbar roll or other support to help maintain good posture. Position the roll slightly above your belt to support the "small of your back". Adjust your seat so that your knees are slightly lower than your hips. Try to avoid prolonged car rides- take frequent breaks.
- Before exiting, create adequate space by pushing your vehicle seat back as far as possible and move the steering wheel up and out of the way. To exit, first scoot slightly to the door side edge of your seat, then keep your knees together and pivot with the same cautions that you used to enter the vehicle. When your feet are shoulder width apart and firmly on the ground or running board, grasp the door and door frame, lean forward, but be sure not to bend your back, as you tighten your abdominal muscles. Slowly thrust your hips forward to stand up.
