Finding loving homes and rescues for the stray and unwanted animals of Duplin County. Space is limited, so every adoption and rescue truly saves a life. 🐾❤️
We invite you to come to view the animals here: https://www.petango.com/DUPLINCOUNTYANIMALSERVICES We will help you find the best-suited animal for you and your family. We do require home checks prior to adoption. An application can be found here: http://www.duplincountync.com/wp-content/uploads/DCAS-Adoption-Application.pdf. and emailed back to dcanimals@duplincountync.com. We also require two (2) forms of I.D. with your correct physical address, one of which requires a photo i.d. We accept debit/credit or cash. All the stray animals here are required by law to be here 72 hours before adoption. Once you fill out the adoption application, please allow 48 business hours for processing. Include any vet references you may have. If you do not own your home and land, you must have appropriate paperwork stating animal consent agreements from the owner. If you reside on base, you will need written consent from Command. By filling out this application, you will be consenting to a home check by your local animal control agency. If your application is approved, you will pick your available pet out. An adoption contract will be signed for every adopted pet. Typically, the animal is old enough for alteration and will be scheduled by Duplin County Animal Control at Our Contracted Vet with the New Owners' knowledge of the appointed time. Please remember if your pet has had surgery, the pet cannot get wet for 10 days and must be in a clean, closed, air-controlled environment to heal properly. We have a 14 kennel shelter with 819 sq. miles and a population of 60,000 people with 7-10 pets per person, with many strays and owner surrenders... There is nowhere to house them nor support their care on the budget we are given, or any budget. We are too small of a shelter to be accepted into a grant program, so we search day in and day out for a place for them, we beg, we plead, and most importantly we try to keep everyone informed so they have an opportunity to make a difference where we cannot, our volunteers and supporters make such huge difference for these furbabies. 🎉 ADOPTED – 12/6/25! 🎉
🐾 Meet Zuri
Personality: Energetic, affectionate, and full of life
Favorite Things: People, dogs, treats — and all the attention
Training Needs: Continued socialization and an active home that can match her energy
Zuri was brought into the shelter by an Animal Control Officer after she showed up on someone’s property. She was scanned and found to have a microchip — which is usually a happy ending. But not for Zuri.
The phone numbers linked to her chip were no longer in service, and the emails we sent went unanswered. Despite that, Zuri hasn’t let it dim her spirit. She’s a sweet battery of love who just wants someone to love and play with — whether it’s a dog or a person.
She’s not quite sure what to do with toys yet, but she loves treats, being petted, and soaking up any attention she can get.
💬 Note: Zuri is high energy. We don’t say that to deter adopters — we just want to make sure her future family or rescue understands her needs. She’ll thrive in a home that can keep up with her zest for life.
Please give Zuri a chance at the loving home she deserves.
Why You’ll Love Her:
• Super affectionate and people-focused
• Dog-friendly and playful
• Full of energy and joy
💙 Older dogs deserve homes too. Could yours be the one Zuri’s been waiting for?

💛 Potential Adopter – 12/5/25! 💛
“This pet has a potential adopter, but we’ll update if anything changes.”
🐾 Meet Matilda
Personality: Calm, independent, and quietly affectionate
Favorite Things: Treats, personal space, and low-key companionship
Training Needs: Continued support with healthy weight gain and a home that respects her independence
Matilda was brought into the shelter by an Animal Control Officer after she showed up on someone’s property.
💬 Disclaimer: Matilda is not emaciated, but she is underweight. We just want potential adopters and rescues to be aware as she continues to gain weight and get back to her healthiest self.
Matilda is a chill, laid-back lady who enjoys doing her own thing. She doesn’t mind other dogs, but she definitely prefers those who match her low energy. If another dog is too hyper, she’s likely to say “no thanks” and walk away.
She seems to prefer people over dogs, but even then, she values her independence. Matilda is the kind of dog who wants to love on you when she’s ready — and then go off and do her own thing, almost like a cat.
She hasn’t shown much interest in toys yet, but that might just mean her favorite one is still out there waiting to be discovered. What she does love is treats — for obvious reasons!
Please give this sweet older girl a chance at the loving home she deserves.
Why You’ll Love Her:
• Calm and easygoing
• Great with low-energy dogs and respectful people
• Independent but affectionate in her own way
💙 Older dogs deserve homes too. Could yours be the one Matilda’s been waiting for?

🐾 Meet Onyx (9 of 9)
Personality: Shy, alert, and quietly curious
Favorite Things: Playing with his siblings and small cat toys
Training Needs: Socialization, gentle handling, and time to build trust
Onyx was brought to the shelter with his eight siblings after Animal Control was called to a property. They arrived as feral kittens, and while they’ve made progress, they’re still shy and unsure around people.
Onyx is currently sharing a cage with his siblings Sprout and Fern. He startles easily and may hiss when frightened, but he’s not aggressive — just nervous and still learning that people can be safe. He finds comfort in his siblings and enjoys playing with small toys, especially when he feels secure.
💬 Disclaimer 1: Onyx is not old enough to be vaccinated yet. If adopted, his new family will need to take him to a vet for vaccinations and medications once he’s old enough.
💬 Disclaimer 2: We believe Onyx would benefit most from being pulled by a rescue that can give him the one-on-one attention he needs. However, he is available for adoption to someone who understands that he will need time, patience, and a calm environment to help him come out of his shell.
Why You’ll Love Him:

🎉 ADOPTED – 12/5/25! 🎉
🐾 Meet Nelli
Personality: Sweet, curious, and quietly affectionate
Favorite Things: Head scratches, gentle pets, and rotating through her toy collection
Training Needs: Just time, love, and a little room to stretch her legs
Nelli was brought to the shelter by a kind member of the public who said she just showed up at their house one day. Since arriving, she’s proven to be a gentle, loving girl who enjoys attention — especially head scratches and soft rubs. She’s not a huge fan of treats (yet), but maybe her favorite one is still out there waiting to be discovered.
Nelli enjoys playing with toys, though she tends to bounce from one to the next — likely out of boredom from being in a small cage most of the day. She tolerates being held better than most grown strays, and while she’ll eventually let you know when she’s ready to get down, she does so politely.
She’s ready for a home where she can finally relax, explore, and be loved the way she deserves.
Why You’ll Love Her:
• Affectionate and gentle
• Enjoys toys and attention
• Tolerates being held and loves head scratches
💙 Older cats deserve love too. Could yours be the home Nelli’s been waiting for?

As of right now, with our tiny building, they are only required the minimum state law requirement of 72 hours. However, we give them 125 hours total to try to find a better alternative. The building fills faster than people can get them out. Euthanasia is a sad truth here but with all the help, the village has performed miracle after miracle for these animals to have a second chance. For the ones we were unable to help, we wear on our sleeves. Help us make a change!!

OUR POLICY By posting on our page, you are agreeing to this policy. We at Duplin County Animal Service realize that the animals desperately need every one of us to do whatever we can to help save them. This page is for the animals at DCAS and we want to believe every comment is meant to aid in the helping of this cause and not to undermine, demean, cause issues or attack any individual or our shelter as a whole. We invite any and all to our page to help the animals whether its cross-posting pictures, sending us donations of items greatly needed or even just to share the happiness of a rescued animal. We will NOT tolerate any type of hate towards anyone including our shelter or staff. We do share all the frustration regarding loss of life in any capacity. We know its hard to see the ones that do not make it and its harder still for those of us who get to know the animals personally. Opinions about loss of a life are valued if portrayed in a constructive, respectful and intelligent way. Those people making comments for shock value or for what we feel is creating problems will be permanently banned from our page. We don't feel that we all have to be best friends or even like each other, but we do need to be respectful of each other while posting on this page. By taking part in discussions on our page, you are agreeing to the policy outlined below. We reserve the right to delete posts. We especially reserve the right to delete posts containing the following:
