✨𝐑𝐢𝐛𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲 + 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐩✨

Our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Open House at The Speech Shed was so much more than a celebration, it was a reminder of the incredible 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 that has lifted this dream from the ground up.

My heart is overflowing with gratitude. To my family and friends who continue to show up, cheer me on, donate their time, and believe in this mission right alongside me…thank you. Your support is the backbone of this little shed with a big purpose. 💛

Thank you to the Kenedy Chamber of Commerce for such a meaningful ribbon cutting and for supporting small, local businesses like The Speech Shed.

A highlight of the night was seeing SO MANY of my grade school teachers from Kenedy ISD. Getting to talk, laugh, and catch up (for the first time in nearly 20 years for some) was incredibly special!! Thank you for shaping me then and still cheering me on now. 🥹

To the Kenedy High School student volunteers...you were absolute 𝑴𝑽𝑷𝒔! Thank you for helping serve, keeping therapy rooms tidy while the kiddos explored, and staying late to clean. 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘥! (& I can’t forget the Kenedy ISD school nurse, Sandy, for also stepping in to help!)

Before I share all the photos from our Open House & Ribbon Cutting, I need to love on my husband — the unofficial Co-Exec of The Speech Shed.

He saw the vision before I did. The day we decided to purchase this building, he looked at it and already imagined what it could become. And from that moment on, he stayed positive through every single step of the renovation — every late night, every “wait, what if we changed the paint color again,” every furniture shuffle, every piece of décor he hung (patiently), every printer emergency he absolutely did not sign up for.

He’s been this steady light in my life long before The Speech Shed was even a dream. All the way back in graduate school…during the stress, the self doubt, the long nights and early mornings….he was the positive voice reminding me I could do this and that the hard work would lead somewhere beautiful.

When I was struggling deeply with PPA/PPD after our first baby, he was the one who urged me to try something new… something flexible… something that would allow me to be more present for our family and still pour into my clients. He cheered me on when I took the leap from being a school based SLP into private practice almost three years ago. He helped name this dream, shape this dream, and after five failed attempts at finding the perfect location — he’s the one who found THIS one. In my hometown. Three minutes from his office. (I’m sure he regrets that part every time I call with a printer crisis.🤗)

I love you. Thank you for believing in me, especially on the days I don’t believe in myself. Thank you for being my light in grad school, for building this dream with me, and for pushing me to do the big and scary things.

The Speech Shed exists because you believed in me. ❤️

Here are 5 simple things I’m doing to support my 8-month-old’s language (And honestly — these work for newborns too. The earlier the better!) ⬇️

1️⃣ Talking all day long
I basically narrate like I’m hosting a tiny cooking show. “Stir, stir… open fridge… brrr!” Natural + easy. 🗣️

2️⃣ Following her lead
If she’s obsessed with the dog, the tag on her sock, or a random speck on the floor… that’s what we chat about. Her interests, not my agenda. 😂

3️⃣ Using sounds, songs, + face 2 face time
Lots of “ba-ba-ba,” silly songs (sometimes completely made up), and exaggerated faces. If anyone saw me, they’d think I’m doing community theatre, but babies LOVE it. 🎶

4️⃣ Reading daily
One page, five pages, or just chewing the corner — it all counts. We cuddle up and call it storytime. A couple of my favorite books were written by SLP’s themselves: Twin Cities Speech Therapy and Learn to Talk With Me 📚

5️⃣ Waiting on purpose
I pause before picking her up or giving the next bite. She usually gives me a look like, “Um… hello??” or makes a noise or gesture, but those little reactions are communication gold. ⏳

✨ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐈 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬✨

As parents, we 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 anticipate our kids’ needs.
We know their favorite snacks… their preferred cup… the drink they always choose.

And without even realizing it, we often hand things over before they ever have to ask.

But when we pause that instinct, just a little, and create something like a snack board, we open the door for 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘴 to happen naturally and playfully.

A snack board gives your child:
🍎 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 to point to, grab, label, or request
🗣️ 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬(more, all done, open, drink, help)
👀 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 like pointing, reaching, shaking/nodding
🥤 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 & 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 by using their special cup or familiar snacks
🤲 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 by letting them feel in control of their snack time
🧠 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭-𝐢𝐧 𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐲 from foods, colors, textures, and actions

It becomes a simple, low-pressure way to support:
⭐ requesting
⭐ labeling
⭐ turn-taking
⭐ AAC use
⭐ early conversation skills

All while they’re doing something they already love… eating snacks!

Snack boards aren’t fancy or complicated. They are...Simple. Intentional. Effective.
