Study suggests cost savings potential for IBS diagnostic test "IBSChek":

A novel diagnostic blood panel could lead to health care savings in diagnosis of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome, compared with an exclusionary diagnostic pathway, according to researchers who extrapolated data to a health plan with 1 million covered lives. The study found that using a cost-minimization model, a $509 cost savings could be realized due to reduced need for downstream testing, such as colonoscopy or computed tomography scans.

However, beware of shortcuts when serious health issues--like inflammatory bowel disease are in the differential. Costs alone are not the whole story, there are benefits potentially lost by using a screening test that is falsely negative.

A study published in Clinical Therapeutics found potential cost savings associated with the use of the IBS diagnostic blood panel IBSchek.
