Today I sat with my mom…

She is 89 and has memory issues, and she told me how hard her life is.
And I understand… because in her mind, it is.

But I also saw something else.
Her friends.
Her laughter.
A beautiful lunch together.

So gently, I reminded her…
there is still love here.

And then I left, sat in the car, and felt it all.

Choosing yourself isn’t always about big decisions.
Sometimes it’s this…

Holding compassion for someone else’s reality while staying grounded in your own

Choosing yourself doesn’t require perfection.
It requires willingness.

I showed up not fully polished, not perfect, but fully where I am.
And it was enough.

Sometimes choosing yourself looks like being seen before you feel ready,
and trusting that who you are in this moment is already enough.

Right now, it looks like traveling, moving, and allowing life to unfold.

What are you doing to choose yourself?

I used to do this work inside prison walls.
Now I do it with women in everyday life.

And the truth is, the struggle is often the same:
not knowing how to choose yourself.

So many of us stay too long in relationships that hurt us, seek affirmation outside ourselves, over-give, and remain in lives that no longer fit because fear tells us we have no other choice.

But we do.
There is another way.
And it begins by choosing yourself.

Yesterday I stood in front of a room of psychologists and practitioners and shared my story.

I’ll be honest… I was nervous.

It had been a long time since I had spoken in this way and my mind tried very hard to convince me I might forget what I wanted to say or stumble over my words.

But something important happens when we move toward fear instead of away from it.

Once I began speaking, the story found its way.

My talk, From Victimization to Empowerment: Choosing Yourself as a Pathway to Freedom, was not about theory or modality. It was about lived experience… the moment we realize we have the power to choose something different for our lives.

Many people came up afterward and shared how deeply they resonated. That’s always the greatest reward.

Growth rarely feels comfortable in the moment… but on the other side of fear there is always expansion.

And sometimes choosing yourself simply means showing up anyway.

Choosing yourself doesn’t always begin with certainty.

Sometimes it begins in survival.

Years ago on a freezing run after leaving my second marriage…

I asked myself one question:

What do I want?

Not what seemed possible.
Not what I had.

What I truly wanted.

So I kept saying yes.

Yes to opportunities.
Yes to growth.
Yes even when I was afraid.

Choosing yourself doesn’t mean the fear disappears.

It means you stop letting fear decide your life.

There was a time when being alone felt like rejection.

I thought solitude meant something was wrong.
That I had to adjust, soften, accommodate — just to keep being chosen.

But aloneness is neutral.
Self-abandonment is not.

One feels quiet.
The other feels like disappearing.

There is a profound difference between being by yourself and leaving yourself.

Alignment may not always come with company.
But it always comes with peace.

Finding balance isn’t elegant.
It’s uncomfortable.
Your legs tremble.
Your mind wants to step off.

But you don’t.

Choosing yourself feels like this.

Unsteady at first.
Not natural.
A little scary.

Until one day…
what once made you shake
becomes your new normal.

Balance isn’t found.
It’s practiced.

When you’ve been wired for chaos, peace can feel unfamiliar.

Intensity can feel like chemistry.
Drama can feel like depth.

And when life softens… the nervous system doesn’t always know what to do with it.

Maturity is learning that calm is not boring.
That steadiness is not stagnation.
That safety can be enough.

The real question isn’t whether peace is available.
It’s whether you can stay when nothing needs fixing.

Releasing the mask.

Not the mask that made me false…
but the one that kept me safe.

We all wear veils at different stages of life.
To survive.
To belong.
To be strong when we felt fragile.

This one served me.
It helped me build. Protect. Endure.

But I no longer need armor to be seen.

The light isn’t behind the mask anymore.
It’s in front of it.
And I’m choosing to step into it — fully.

Choosing yourself isn’t about becoming someone new.
It’s about removing what you no longer need. 🔥

We all wear masks.

The agreeable mask.
The accommodating mask.
The one that keeps the peace but hides the truth.

Most of the time, the mask isn’t deception.
It’s protection.
It helped us belong.
It helped us feel safe.

But there comes a moment when the mask feels heavier than the risk of removing it.

Choosing yourself isn’t about blaming who you were.
It’s about recognizing when protection has turned into self-abandonment.

And gently deciding you no longer need to hide.

Choose yourself. 🤍

I’ve been reflecting on what it truly means to choose yourself.

It’s not only about relationships, work, or community.
It’s also about choosing yourself as an informed, conscious human being.

We’re living through rapid change. With AI evolving, new systems emerging, and headlines designed to provoke reaction, it can feel overwhelming.

Choosing yourself isn’t reacting to every voice.
It’s pausing.
Researching.
Thinking critically.
Listening inward before you decide what to believe.

We may not be able to stop change.
But we can choose how we meet it.

This is a powerful time to be awake. Curious. Self-led.
Not pulled by noise, but grounded in awareness.

And staying informed — thoughtfully, intentionally — is choosing yourself.

I love you.🤍
