Most families don’t sit down and plan “the aging conversations.” They usually happen after something forces them to — a fall, a hospital visit, or a moment when you realize you’re guessing about what your parent actually wants.

We see this all the time. The stress isn’t caused by a lack of love. It’s caused by a lack of clarity.

There are five conversations that make an enormous difference when they happen early: home safety, medical wishes, financial organization, living preferences, and who should make decisions if needed. These discussions don’t have to be heavy or dramatic. They just need to start.

We put together a practical guide to help adult children begin these conversations in a respectful and productive way.
