"Im not Making Enough Milk"
As a lactation specialist this is something i hear often. After I ask them why, they usually respond that their baby crys "often" after a feeding or "soon" after a feed .
New moms often assume that crying equals hunger, especially in the early days, but babies cry for a wide variety of reasons. It's completely normal for a newborn to cry, and it doesn’t always mean they’re hungry or that there’s a problem with the milk supply.
Here are some reasons other than hunger that would make a baby cry:
- Wet and Dirty diaper
- Gas
- Tiredness or Overstimulation
- Need for comfort and cuddling
- Temperature discomfort (too hot or too cold)
- Discomfort from clothing or swaddle
- Reflux
- teething (4 months and older)
Before you go and worry about your supply, try and attend to some of the other and common reasons a baby might be crying.
Crying is a normal way for babies to communicate. As a new parent, it can feel like a challenge to decipher what your baby needs, but over time, you’ll learn to recognize your baby’s unique cues. Trust yourself and your instincts, and always reach out for support when you need it. You’ve got this!
