In the NICU, babies aren’t just growing. They’re building the foundations of their social and emotional lives.
A new study found that very preterm infants who listened to recordings of their mothers reading aloud for several hours a night showed more mature development in a key language pathway in the brain (the left arcuate fasciculus) at term-equivalent age. That’s a powerful reminder: even in intensive care, human voices are shaping tiny brains.
Although this study included a small sample size and doesn't illustrate if the mother's voice is uniquely powerful compared to other recorded speech, from an infant and early childhood mental health (IECMH) perspective, this reinforces the fact that the more we can surround even the tiniest and most vulnerable infants with consistent human connection and nurturing input, the better foundation we build for their healthy growth and development.
