Elvis Presley’s grand legacy sees a huge resurgence during Elvis Week, which is held in August each year and coincides with his death anniversary, August 16. From August 9 to 17, Elvis fans celebrate the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, his music and movies, and pays respect to all things Presley in a typically flamboyant and fun fashion. This event is a pilgrimage and phenomenon of sorts for music lovers and fans globally.

Many of the patients we serve at Willow Tree Hospice LOVE Elvis! Luckily, we have board-certified music therapists who can honor patients' preferred music, providing a holistic way to manage all challenges and symptoms at end-of-life.

Our board-certified music therapists are trained extensively with music skills and counseling techniques to walk alongside hospice patients and their families during terminal illness. Whether for reminiscence, pain management or creating legacy projects, our music therapy team is here as a part of the interdisciplinary team to care for your loved one.

The next time you take a look at your pup, try to figure out what she’s thinking. If you decide that her thoughts are all about how soon dinner is or when you’re going for a walk, you are shortchanging your best friend.

According to a study done by the Journal of Animal Cognition, there is a lot more going on in that precious furry head than you might think. Dogs understand human language and can learn far more than “sit” and “no.” Just recall your last therapy visit and count the number of words and signals you used with your own dog. Pretty amazing when you think about it.

Dogs are also able to distinguish between friend and foe. They can follow where you are pointing using your hand, foot, or your gaze. And think about the tricks you may have taught your pet. A trick is really nothing more than communication between the handler and their dog. Something else that is amazing about dog cognition is their ability to sense the world around them using their noses – hence narcotics sniffer dogs or those pups that work on crime scenes.

Give your pup a huge hug for me and while you’re doing that, see if you can tell what he’s thinking. There is probably more going on in there than you can imagine.

Willow Tree Hospice wishes the Department of Veterans Affairs a very happy 92nd birthday!

World War I – the “War to End All Wars” – had concluded 12 years earlier, creating nearly five million Veterans. Over 204,000 were disabled by weaponry that had never been seen before this war.

Despite the challenging times facing the country, President Herbert Hoover acted. On July 21, 1930, Hoover signed Executive Order 5398, consolidating three agencies administering Veterans benefits programs into a single entity called the Veterans Administration, thereby creating the modern VA. The action changed how the federal government and the public perceived Veterans’ compensation and other benefits.

Over the past nine decades, VA’s portfolio has grown to include 170 VA Medical Centers and 1,269 outpatient sites; 141 national cemeteries; and 56 VBA Regional Offices and 300 VA Vet Centers. The second largest Federal organization in the U.S., VA, with 379,885 employees, continues to innovate and modernize to serve millions of America’s patriots and their families and beneficiaries.

Willow Tree Hospice

Willow Tree Hospice is a community agency founded by nurses and deeply rooted in the local area. Our highly-trained and qualified team is dedicated to providing care and support for each individual’s end-of-life journey.

Our Certified Hospice Medical Director works with our interdisciplinary team to ensure that the care goals for each patient are achieved. A registered nurse oversees an individualized plan of care and coordinates with the patient’s physician to meet the changing needs of each patient. Certified nursing assistants will help with personal care of the patient, based upon the plan of care developed by the RN in collaboration with the patient, physician, and family.

A chaplain and social worker will also offer the patient and the family spiritual and emotional support. In addition, we have a cadre of volunteers who provide visits for companionship. We offer a number of complimentary therapies including gentle touch therapies and pet therapy.

Our certified music therapist works with patients at all stages throughout a patient’s journey, utilizing music to decrease anxiety and pain, promote relaxation, facilitate communication, and provide support in life review and legacy work.
