New KBPW bills released on March 1st are most likely much higher than normal. Here is why.

đź’ˇ If your utility bill spiked this month, you're definitely not alone. Winter Storm Fern is a big part of the reason why.

From January 23–26, 2026, Fern rolled across Missouri and much of the U.S., bringing dangerous cold, heavy snow, and widespread power issues. Even though Kennett didn’t see the heaviest snow and ice, the extreme temperature plunge forced heating systems to run nonstop — and that shows up on our energy bills.

🌡️ Kennett, MO Temperatures During Winter Storm Fern
(AccuWeather historical data)
• Jan 23: High 33°F | Low 17°F [accuweather.com]
• Jan 24: High 17°F | Low 11°F [accuweather.com]
• Jan 25: High 18°F | Low 10°F [accuweather.com]
• Jan 26: High 18°F | Low 3°F — the coldest morning of the storm [accuweather.com]

That’s four straight days of freezing temperatures, including multiple days where highs didn’t even crack 20°F. These are exactly the kinds of conditions that drive heating costs through the roof.

⚡ Why bills jumped:
• Heating systems worked overtime to compensate for low temps
• More electricity and natural gas demand during the coldest days
• Higher energy usage overall

If your latest bill was painful, this storm is a big part of the story — and you’re definitely not the only one feeling it.

These baby squirrels were rescued by a few of our employees, and our resident Snow White, Aaron Morrison, is caring for them. They sure are cute, but did you know that squirrels and other wildlife are the top reason for power outages?
