When we listen with openness and without judgement we are seeking clarity and understanding. Too often we find ourselves perched and ready to squawk back about what someone else is or isn't doing while the real purpose of the conversation gets lost in the process. There is no room for connection in a position of defense. So lay down the defenses and listen, then wait before you respond. Pause and breathe. Process the words that just passed and consider what comes next. Do you need more information before responding? If yes, ask to clarify. Then decide, would it be helpful to repeat back what you heard to ensure you are both hearing the same thing.
Patience in communication is an important aspect of connection. To connect we must understand and to understand we must patiently listen, ponder and thoughtfully respond.
