Make sure you're setting SMART goals for your health this year, for example:
❌ "I want to exercise every day this year"
✅ "I will walk in my neighborhood on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for thirty minutes every week this year to improve my cardiovascular health."
Let's break down why the second statement is a SMARTer goal, setting you up for success:
- SPECIFIC: "exercise" ➡️ "walk in my neighborhood"
- MEASURABLE: "more" ➡️ "thirty minutes"
- ATTAINABLE: "every day" ➡️ three days per week (a gentler start to a new habit)
- RELEVANT: "to improve my cardiovascular health". Articulate your motivation. Why do you want to implement this habit or reach this goal?
- TIME-SENSITIVE: "every week this year".➡️ Sometimes it helps to have an end date in mind. Though exercise is a great lifelong habit, you can schedule "checkpoints" throughout the year to pause, evaluate how you are progressing, and modify your goals whenever you need to.
An "all or nothing" mindset can be discouraging. Instead, try to take it one day at a time.
