In honor of Women's History Month, join us in celebrating Diane!
Diane Rae Scott Foglesong was born on March 19, 1933, in Akron, Ohio, to Evelyn and Raymond Scott of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The middle child of three grew up with two brothers during the heart of the Great Depression, an experience that shaped her lifelong values. Although her family was not impoverished, the widespread shortages of the era instilled in Diane with a deep sense of frugality, resourcefulness, and respect for the careful use of what she had.
During elementary school, Diane met Kenneth Foglesong, a boy who would become her lifelong companion. The two grew up together and graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in January 1951, proudly considering themselves childhood sweethearts. Ken went on to attend Ohio Northern University’s School of Pharmacy in Ada, Ohio, while Diane took classes at Kent State University and worked as a secretary at the BF Goodrich offices in downtown Akron.
Diane and Ken married in September 1954, and Ken earned his pharmacy degree the following year. Between 1956 and 1962, they welcomed four children—Kendi, Karen, Doug, and Deidre. In 1958, they purchased their first and only home in Stow, Ohio, where Diane devoted herself fully to raising her family. Her children were the center of her world, and through her involvement in organizations such as the Garden Club and First Presbyterian Church of Stow, where she and Ken were charter members, she formed friendships that lasted a lifetime.
Diane later expanded her volunteer service by serving on the board of trustees for the community swimming pool, a role that came with the much-enjoyed perk of lifetime family pool passes. In the 1970s, Diane and Ken purchased a small drugstore in Cuyahoga Falls, naming it Chestnut Pharmacy. They operated the business together for about a decade, employing a small staff that included their children, many of whom began their working lives there.
After selling the pharmacy, Diane discovered a love for working outside the home and accepted a position as an American Greetings retailer for a local supermarket. True to her practical nature, she delighted in the access to greeting cards and gift-wrapping supplies, and the job allowed her to purchase her first car with her own earnings, a Ford Probe sedan, an achievement of which she was very proud.
Throughout her children’s younger and teenage years, Diane helped create cherished family memories during annual summer vacations to Ontario, Canada, at a rustic camp built by her parents and family friends. The camp welcomed groups of boys from local YMCA programs, offering experiences rooted in outdoor skills and simpler living. Because it was a family-owned operation, it also provided an affordable and meaningful retreat for Diane and her family, memories they continue to treasure.
Diane remained deeply involved in her church throughout her life, volunteering in many capacities and singing in the choir for years. Her faith has always been a steady foundation, sustaining her through life’s joys and challenges, including the loss of her beloved husband in 2022 after nearly 68 years of marriage.
She loves her children and grandchildren dearly and was especially involved in the early lives of three of her grandchildren. Today, she delights in visits from her great-grandchildren, including her first, Brenan, and her newest, Olive, born in 2025.
Humble and never boastful, Diane consistently celebrates the accomplishments of others. She is quietly loving, possesses a raucous sense of humor, and carries a playful spirit, while never seeking the spotlight. She was a devoted daughter and loving wife, and she continues to be a remarkable mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
