Distress tolerance is the ability to use skills in stressful moments, which is very much needed when your child is having feelings and you are responding to them. Modeling self-regulation, taking time to calm, tolerating challenges, remaining in a conversation when someone else is expressing themselves and not solving their problems are crucial for kids’ emotional and relational development.

As a therapist for 25 years, I’ve had a full career listening to clients about their coping behaviors and providing non-judgmental support in order for them to understand the function of their strategies, including eating disorder behavior.

As I listen to the debate back and forth between the supporters of weight loss drugs and the naysayers, I find myself thinking of a very common question I ask my clients:

What is the function of this use?

Obviously GLP-1 use is satisfying our society’s constant pursuit of thinness through a quick, medical solution, however,  I’m also hearing women say it helps stop the “food noise.”
“Food noise” is a colloquial term used to describe what therapists call ‘intrusive thoughts’: upsetting, repetitive thoughts that can feel hard to manage.
My questions are:

What happens to the intrusive thoughts after you discontinue the use of GLP-1s?

Do you understand why your intrusive thoughts occur in the first place?

Do you understand how to manage intrusive thoughts once they arise so you can sustain your behavioral change?

There are evidence-based strategies to address intrusive thinking, which will lead to more sustainable health and weight management.

If “food noise” is NOT assessed and addressed properly, the challenge will return when GLP-1s are discontinued. Frankly, I find it insulting that providers aren’t offering more effective solutions for patients that have chosen to use these medications.

Ask your provider what happens after you discontinue use and share your findings here!

Partners often argue about deeper processes through facts and content. We have all learned to debate the facts of a situation, rather than collaboratively repairing an event that didn’t work for each other. If we learn that repair requires curiosity and accurate expression of your experience, rather than blame, we can improve our relationships! Try “I” statements to start: I Feel (Insert Feeling Here).
