After facing her own breast cancer diagnosis, she turned her personal journey into a powerful mission — founding earlier.org – Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test®, the nation’s only nonprofit dedicated solely to funding research for an earlier biological detection test for breast cancer.

Because of Martha’s determination and faith, countless researchers have been supported and countless lives touched. Her legacy is one of hope, resilience, and the belief that earlier detection will save lives.

Welcome to this week's Bonus Content of "Isn’t That Interesting?!" We’re joined by Dr. Jennifer Plichta, who is a Surgical Oncologist at Duke Health and an Associate Professor of Surgery & Population Health Sciences at Duke University. She has received two grants from earlier.org.

In 2023, Dr. Plichta was awarded $40,000 for “Defining the genomic clonal relationship between atypical breast lesions and metachronous invasive breast cancer," and in 2024, she was awarded $30,000 for “Improving Our Understanding of Genetic Information Sharing among Patients with Pathogenic Mutations Related to Breast Cancer.

Dr. Jennifer Plichta is an Associate Professor of Surgery & Population Health Sciences at Duke University. She serves as the Director of the Breast Risk Assessment Clinic in the Duke Cancer Institute, where she cares for patients with breast cancer, benign breast problems, and those with an increased risk of breast cancer. Her clinical interests include establishing routine breast cancer risk assessment for women and creating personalized management strategies for those found to be “high risk”.

Dr. Plichta’s research focuses of identifying and managing women with risk factors for breast cancer, including those with genetic mutations, such as BRCA, those with abnormal breast biopsies, and those with a family history of breast cancer. She is also studying metastatic breast cancer and how breast cancer staging can be used to improve patient care and education.

Tiffany shares her story of survivorship and what - quite ironically - became the "best year of her life." Tiffany talks about being open to receiving the gifts along the way, including putting things in perspective, allowing others to love and care for you, and harnessing control.
