1. Love is a million little things.
It’s back scratches on road trips and ironing shirts at 3:00 a.m. It’s overlooking the 1,847th piece of furniture brought home from the side of the road, or singing “There’s nothing quite as pretty as Mary in the morning” when “Mary, Mary, quite contrary” might feel more accurate. Love isn’t only the big gestures—the Valentine’s bouquets and nice dinners—it’s the quiet, steady act of showing up.
2. Love begets love.
Three generations still crowd into the same room for Christmas. Sunday dinners and birthday parties still happen. Their love didn’t end with them—it left a legacy of more love.
3. Love serves.
When my grandfather was dying of cancer, my grandmother cleaned him—tenderly, tearfully. He made her breakfast. He called my aunt, the nurse in our family, to check my grandmother’s vitals, just in case. Even in illness, they kept caring for each other.
For better or for worse, in sickness and in health. Happy Valentine’s Day. ❤️💗
