Giving beans an ice bath before cooking

While cooking beans is pretty straightforward, salting the water adds flavor and doesn’t make the beans tough.
An even smarter tip is plopping beans into an ice bath.
This helps prevent the beans from overcooking and splitting or falling apart.
The texture is fantastic.

Foods that lift your mood
Oats

Oats are a whole grain that can keep you in good spirits all morning. You can enjoy them in many forms, such as overnight oats, oatmeal, muesli, and granola. They’re an excellent source of fiber, providing 8 grams in a single raw cup.

Fiber helps slow your digestion of carbs, allowing for a gradual release of sugar into the bloodstream to keep your energy levels stable. Those who ate 1.5–6 grams of fiber at breakfast reported better mood and energy levels. This was attributed to more stable blood sugar levels, which is important for controlling mood swings and irritability.

Although other sources of whole grains can have this effect, oats may be especially advantageous, as they’re also a great source of iron, with 1 raw cup (81 grams) boasting 19% of your daily needs.

Iron deficiency anemia, one of the most common nutrient deficiencies, is associated with low iron intake. Its symptoms include fatigue, sluggishness, and mood disorders. It is suggested that people experience improvements in these symptoms after eating iron-rich foods or supplementing with iron.

Staying focused

Another benefit of meditation is that your sense of focus will be enhanced.
You’ll stay in the present moment through concentrated time spent focusing on your breath and presence instead of quickly going from one task to the next.
If your attention span is short, studies show that even a few minutes of meditation can vastly improve your ability to focus.

Curious items from the past whose function is too hard to guess
Hooked ice pick

Before the invention of household refrigerators and freezers, there was a whole industry revolving around selling ice.
It was harvested in the winter, collected from the surface of lakes, and then placed in special glaciers, where it could be stored all year round and from there it was delivered to customers in the form of blocks.
The hook in the photo was used both to break the ice off the block and to move its pieces without touching them with your hands.

Food you can eat past the expiration date
Bottled and pickled stuff

They may lose a little bit of their magic once opened, but bottled and pickled food can keep even once you've dug into them.
They can probably last about a year after the sell-by date.
