I have been working hard for the past three years. From RMA classes to Midwifery Assistant classes, I have had my nose in the books; and I am so incredibly excited that I am officially offering Montrice support.
When you're pregnant, you'll be visiting your care provider regularly and attending countless parenting classes. However, once the baby arrives, it can seem like you are suddenly alone.
Despite its strong healthcare system, the United States often ranks at the bottom of the list when it comes to postpartum care.
One of the biggest differences between birthing women in America and other countries is the routine follow-up visits after leaving the maternity ward. After giving birth, it is completely normal to feel overwhelmed and lost, which is why having an experienced montrice supporting you with postpartum care can be incredibly beneficial.
In European countries such as Sweden, Denmark, and England, midwives visit moms at home 4-8 days after leaving the maternity ward. There are similar practices throughout the world; for instance, a midwife in Cambodia offers massages, nourishment, and herbal remedies to newborns in their first six weeks.
There is a severe lack of this type of care in the United States.
Enter the montrice!
In addition to providing support, montrices have clinical training and are trained in monitoring and caring for mothers after birth.
As your Montrice, my mission is to provide postpartum care that offers new moms everything they need following the birth of their child. From checking vitals to postpartum care, my goal is to help you prioritize the health of both yourself and your baby.

I am so excited to add this next level of postpartum care to the Valley!

A family's greatest life-changing experience is undoubtedly welcoming a new baby home. There are usually a lot of changes, questions, excitement, and emotions during the first couple of weeks at home after the hospital. It can be incredibly helpful to have family and friends support you after giving birth, but a house full of people can also feel overwhelming at times.

When you have a baby, there are a lot of personal choices to consider, and people closest to you may have their own opinions about the decisions you make. In regards to childbirth, postpartum, and parenting, people in your life can often give you advice on what you should or shouldn't do. Most of the time, this advice is loving, but it can leave families feeling confused and lacking confidence. As a parent, you will experience this at some point during your parenting journey. Every time I work with a new client, I remind them that there are many ways to parent and encourage them to discover what works best for them.

Postpartum and your first weeks at home with your baby are when you will find your own rhythm, and you may adjust your approach multiple times. There may be visitors who want to help, such as your parents, your partner's parents, or friends with children. There may be unsolicited advice they offer regarding parenting, baby care, baby sleep, and postpartum healing. While it comes from a place of love, these opinions and pieces of advice can feel very overwhelming and isolating when you are a new parent. Each postpartum experience is unique, and I encourage you to make the choices that work best for your family.

Once your baby is born, you'll have to determine whether (if any) vaccinations will be given. Pediatric vaccines are most commonly administered before 2 years of age, but a doula can help prepare a birth plan that includes those administered in the hospital or at the first pediatrician appointment.
My job as a doula is to ensure that you have sufficient information to make informed choices. I can not (and would never want to) determine what vaccines are right for your family, but I can arm you with the information you need to make these decisions for yourself.
My role will be to assist my clients in gathering more information and feeling confident in their decision as they navigate these choices.

EPISODE THREE: YOUR DOULA AT NIGHT
The concept of overnight newborn care can be new to some parents. Parents often ask me: “what does a postpartum doula do overnight for their family while they sleep? It almost seems too good to be true! Rest assured, this exists and works beautifully.

Postpartum doula roles vary so much from family to family that it is difficult to answer, “what do you do?” A better question is, “what don't you do?"

Overnight newborn care is all about getting more sleep for the entire family! As a result, I won't be doing too much noisy housework. However, I will take care of simple tasks to make your life easier. I will then devote all my time to taking care of your baby, allowing you to sleep well.

Getting you the best sleep is my top priority. I work closely with my clients to make sure I meet their expectations.

Your doula is capable and responsible when it comes to taking care of your baby. Sleep is a significant contributor to mental health, so I am here to help new parents get as much sleep as possible.

EPISODE TWO: NUTRITION

Food is definitely one of my love languages as a woman who loves to eat (and gets hangry when she doesn't). During my work, I feel a deep urge to ensure my new mothers are fed well and frequently and have all the energy and nutrients they need to recover.

I am happy to cook for you at your home during our postpartum visits. You can ask me to prepare your favorite dishes or choose from my postpartum favorites. Keep in mind that we are looking for yummy, warm, nutrient-dense foods that your body can easily digest.

Galactagogues (foods that boost milk production, such as yams, beets, carrots, blueberries, oats, and dark leafy greens) are especially helpful if you're breastfeeding

On a good day, I can send you off for a nap, soothe your baby to sleep, and cook while watching your baby. You'll find that everything is easier when you're rested and fed.

Welcome doula baby number 195...and my semi-final birth. I'm currently sitting with my cup of tea, looking out at the misty mountains, and am processing the past two days.
I walked into that room and witnessed an intimate and sacred birth environment as such I had never been present to the likes before. I never know how much support my families are going to need, but throughout the labor I quietly observed mom and dad move through labor. It was as if I was watching this sacred dance of love, life, and labor.
Throughout the events of the night, I watched mom and dad communicate, support, and advocate for each other.
To have been a part of that sacred space was such an incredible privilege. And with the birth of my last doula birth-doula baby, comes the end of my birth support but the beginning of my full circle postpartum doula era.

With so much love and gratitude

In honor of World Doula Week, I'm going to be doing an Instagram series highlighting and explaining what I do as a Postpartum Doula. Most people don’t know that the job exists, let alone what it entails, so please read, comment, and spread the good word!

To begin:

Hi, I’m Brooke! I live in Ketchum, Idaho, with my son (8) and daughter (4). In 2014, I said “to hell with it" and followed my dream to build a business as a doula.

WHAT IS A POSTPARTUM DOULA?

I’m so happy you asked! The same way a labor doula supports, nurtures, and empowers you during labor, I am there with you as you recover from birth, care for your newborn, and adjust to life with a new baby. Incorporating the concept of "mothering the mother," I create a safe space for mothers to heal, rest, express joys and concerns, mourn, celebrate, nourish, ask for help, and step into their shifting roles with full vitality. Pretty rad, right?

Have you had support from a postpartum doula? What was your favorite part of it?

If you didn’t, what would have been different about your postpartum experience if you had?
