Sad summer is coming to an end?

Here is something to add to your calendar for Summer 2023 to help get you through the dark winter. The retreat is all about creating space to grow, learn, and play with other women. As an adult woman, I have found it really challenging to find spaces where I can meet and develop close relationships with others like me. I want to create a space the pushes past small talk and mingling, and moves toward intentional connection and building true community.

I’m back! With an Announcement!

It’s been a minute. I have been quiet on my page for awhile, because honestly, I needed a break! I love creating content that is helpful and authentic to who I am, but I can easily get swept away from authenticity and into numbers, followers, and just endlessly scrolling for trends. I chose to take some time to recharge across some beautiful landscapes and being around my favorite people.

I am still finding my way with authenticity and balance, which will be a continual practice on this page.

In the meantime, I have a big announcement coming tomorrow! I have been working on a project for the last couple of months that I am so excited to share with you!

Which do you want to try?

I have been reflecting a lot on the idea of Equilibrium. As humans, we love equilibrium, we love when we know what to expect and how that creates structure for us. The only thing with equilibrium is that we can get stuck in mindsets or ruts and have difficulty getting out of them. The good thing is, we CAN shift equilibrium, but it is going to take a little bit of effort to implement. Once we create a shift, that naturally becomes our new normal.

These routines are small things you can do daily to help shift you out of that stuck place you are in. When shifting your routine, start small and use what you have. Try one of these for five minutes a day connected to something already in your routine (ex. Journal with your morning coffee, do a body scan when you first wake up or right when you get in bed at night, or a quick yoga routine while you wait for you coffee to brew).

Do you ever feel like you have lost control and don't know why?

That is emotional dysregulation, where our brain is releasing chemicals into our body to protect us and our thinking and logical center in our brain goes offline. This is a normal evolutionary response to stress and danger. The difficulty is that our brains are very subjective to what is actual danger and what isn't danger. Our brains take the information from our whole life and decipher what is dangerous and what may look like dangerous events of the past.

Understanding our dysregulation and what causes it, helps us to help our brain understand what is truly dangerous and what are situations and events that we have the tools to handle.

Have you ever felt overwhelmed with Mindfulness Apps?

I know I have, there is an abundance of resources when it comes to mindfulness and it can be easy to get paralyzed with the amount of choices. This guide is here to help you break down some of the basics of mindfulness and how to cultivate a practice!

Mindfulness doesn't have to be long and it doesn't have to be guided by someone else. Just being aware of what is going on in your mind and body at any moment is mindfulness.

When it is time, it is time...

Ending a relationship with a therapist can be just as difficult as ending romantic relationships or friendships. We get close to our therapists and develop deep connections with them. Sometimes we end the relationship because it just isn't working anymore, and sometimes we feel content with what we have accomplished in therapy and are ready to continue working towards our goals without a therapist.

Like all relationships, there can be grief, even with closure. If you are deciding to end your relationship with your therapist or move on, I encourage you to talk with your therapist about ending the relationship and what those steps look like.

How are you feeling after Monday?

Mental Health is not a point we attain in the future, it is a practice in the present. We often think of mental health as something we will have or be at some point, when in reality we aren't always going to feel mentally healthy no matter how hard we try. It can be really easy to feel like we failing when we are doing all of the things we are supposed to be to "happy" and we still feel down or depressed.

Happiness is a lot of times the goal we have in our mind, when really balance is what we need. Acknowledging that as humans we have ups and downs, and that is ok. We don't want to feel like we are stuck on either side of the spectrum but grounded in the middle with the ability to adapt to both highs and lows.

Did I miss any?

We often think of grief in the terms of losing someone close to use due to death, but grief is a broad spectrum of losses. There are often types of losses that we don't feel like we can talk about because they feel out of the norm of typical grief. Grief is not defined by what is an acceptable loss, but by the presence of loss.

Grief is not linear...

Grief and loss are common reasons that people come to counseling, but we often don't recognize that why we are coming in is due to a loss. Loss impacts us in dynamic ways, some painful and some beautiful. Loss and Grief are to be embraced as we find ways to live with the pain we are experiencing. Grief is never something to get over, but something to hold and incorporate into our lives.

You deserve to find a therapist that you connect with..

Finding a therapist can be daunting, especially trying to find a Trauma Therapist. Most therapists received training about trauma and working with trauma, but not everyone specializes in trauma work. It can feel scary when talking to a therapist and asking questions because therapists appear as an authority figure. It is ok to ask questions, and it is ok to think about whether you want to see a particular person before committing.

Give yourself time and meet a couple of therapists before making a decision.

You deserve to have a therapist you trust and feel connected to!
