🧒🏫 Did you know many schoolkids suffer from spine pain due in part to how they wear their backpacks?

According to a 2025 study of 384 pre‑teens, over half routinely carried backpacks weighing more than 10–15% of their body weight, commonly recommended as the safe limit. Alarmingly, about 50% still slung their bags over one shoulder, which unevenly stresses the spine.

🔍 What did the research find?

Carrying too heavy a backpack strains muscles, tendons, ligaments, and spinal discs in the neck, mid‑ and low back, and pelvis.

For each additional kilogram of bag weight, the risk of experiencing back pain increases by up to 45%.

Even though older kids tend to carry relatively lighter bags, spine pain increases with grade level—because they wear them for longer durations.

✅ Why it matters
Spinal pain in youth can impair daily activities, posture, and future spine health. This isn’t just temporary discomfort—it may have long‑term effects if habits aren’t addressed early.

🎒 Tips to protect young spines:
1 - Keep backpack weight to 10–15% (or less!) of a child’s body weight.
2 - Encourage using both straps with snug fit and waist support.
3 - Teach kids to pack only what’s needed each day—use lockers or rotating items when possible.
4 - Take frequent breaks or switch to rolling bags when loads are heavy.
