No matter how much knowledge I have, nothing beats what your horse or dog tells me. I say this often when it comes to massage and bodywork, but it’s truly obvious when it comes to tack and saddle fit. During saddle fit evaluations, I am looking at the horse, the saddle in detail, the horse’s body conformation and biomechanics. Sometimes, the saddle looks amazing on paper and “should” work but when it is put on their back they overreact and show soreness.

At the end of the day with all the training and education in the world, the animal knows best and they DO NOT LIE. So, put away the ego of what “should be” and start focusing on what the horse is actually telling you instead.

Which is more important education or experience? I would love to throw a gr***de in there and say they are both important, but experience is the best teacher by far.

I openly admit I first started with a one-week hands on course. It was incredibly useful and gave me a good basic understanding. But I don’t want to life my life as a basic anything. I want to be GREAT. I want to be as effective as a I can be.

I decided to use my training as a jumping off point. I have many, many certifications under my belt and do continuing education every other year. That being said, it is when I experimented with the techniques I was taught that I truly felt like I was becoming gifted. Education and time put in are important factors, but play with technique a little and step outside of the box you were given. Make the technique your OWN. Amazing things can happen.

Did you know there are 16 muscles in each ear? Yes! Ear cupping is a wonderful, gentle way to warm the base of the ears and soften any tension. Hold gently for 15-30 seconds and allow the ears to move in whichever direction your horse prefers.

This will relieve tension in the face, jaw, and poll. Let me know what you think!

Disclaimer: these gentle techniques are homework for the horse owner and not intended to replace veterinary care or bodywork/massage therapy with a professional. This is simply small tool you can use at home!

Nope, not going there ever. Every week I see dogs or horses for bodywork and a new client will inevitably ask me for my advice on their current medications or supplements. I will not say anything but, “What does your veterinarian recommend?” As a massage therapist and holistic practitioner but NOT A VETERINARIAN, I cannot prescribe these items or make changes to what is recommended by their healthcare provider. Please don’t ask.

Certified Equine Ergonomists from SaddleFit4Life are trained to evaluate over 80-points of saddle fit to horse and rider, covering both Western and English disciplines. The evaluation covers static fit, as shown in the photos, as well as dynamic fit during walk, trot, and canter under saddle.

It is nearly impossible to find the perfect fit unless your equipment is customized to your horse. However, an animal in regular work will change muscle tone and balance, affecting the fit so it is important to have an evaluation at minimum one to two times per year, preferably every three months, even with custom saddles.

The information can be daunting. 80 points of saddle fit! The good news you aren’t expected to know everything, that’s why I’m here for you.
