As a devoted Iyengar Yoga practitioner and teacher, I have spent decades studying directly with the Iyengars in Pune, India. My teaching integrates the discipline and precision of traditional Iyengar training with the healing energy of Maui. Each class is a quiet yet powerful invitation to awaken the intelligence of the body and experience the stillness of the mind. My connection with Iyengar Yoga began in the 1980s. Over the years, I made sixteen journeys to India, dedicating four years to intensive study with the legendary B.K.S. Iyengar and his children, Geeta and Prashant, at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune. A diverse background in dance, bodybuilding, racquetball, and running adds depth and perspective to my practice and teaching. Beyond yoga, my travels through India, Nepal, Egypt, Israel, and Japan—and visits to sacred sites—have profoundly influenced my teaching style and life philosophy. I bring to my classes not only structure and precision, but also a love of diversity, exploration, and the richness of human experience. Passionate about healthy living, organization, and beauty in everyday life, I embrace yoga as a holistic lifestyle that supports both inner and outer well-being. Louis, Missouri, I followed a calling to Maui in December 1999, making a life-changing move to live and teach yoga in paradise. In 2002, I founded the Maui Yoga Path at Mana Kai Maui in Kīhei—a sanctuary where students can deepen their practice, restore balance, and connect body, mind, and spirit.

Power Starts at Feet

In yoga, every pose begins from the ground up — and nowhere is this more evident than in Tāḍāsana (Mountain Pose), the “foundation āsana.”

🔸 Feet as Your Foundation:
Your feet are your roots. In Tāḍāsana, the part of the body that connects to the floor is the foundation.
When you stand, aim for maximum contact of your soles with the mat.

🔸 How to Establish a Steady Base:
1️⃣ Balance the Weight: Evenly distribute weight between right & left foot, inner & outer edges, front & back.

2️⃣ Press Down Firmly: Press the feet down to awaken your legs—watch your kneecaps lift as the thighs engage.
3️⃣ Specific Foot Actions: Lift all 10 toes, spread them wide, then place them back down creating visible space between them.
4️⃣ Leg Engagement: As you press the feet down, move the upper leg (knee to hip) back to activate support and stability.

🔸 Why the Foot’s Structure Matters:
Think of your foot like a dome—the arch distributes weight from heel to toe mounds. Standing correctly allows this arch to function; when it collapses, weight and alignment are thrown off.
What you learn in Tāḍāsana translates directly into other standing poses, like Vīrabhadrāsana II, making your entire practice stronger and safer.
When you master your foundation, you build steadiness, confidence, and alignment for every pose to come.
