Congratulations on your retirement, Verna Harris! We wished Verna well with a celebration last week.

She started at Lancashire as a CNA in 2017, and was promoted to Nurse Scheduler, where she went above and beyond to ensure we are adequately staffed to provide quality care to our residents. She always was willing to go beyond her staffing duties to help train other schedulers, provide quality care to residents, help on the tray line when needed and lend an ear any team member.

“Her passion for quality care given to residents has never gone unnoticed,” says Administrator Amy Payne. “Verna brings a sense of culture to the workplace that is welcoming, positive, loving and caring, with a strong old-school work ethic. I will always appreciate Verna’s hard work and we will miss her dearly. We wish her the best in her next chapter of life!”

Over two days, our team took our residents out on the town to Kilmarnock Antique Gallery and Lee's Restaurant for lunch. Everyone had a great time! Thanks to our team for making sure all of our residents who wanted to participate had assistance, and thanks to our local businesses for supporting our outing.

Congratulations to our apprentice program graduates! We were honored to host our first class and welcome you to our team.

The seven students graduated from Care Assistants to Nurse Aides from our earn-as-you-learn apprenticeship program.

The Lancashire graduates are: Angel Burnham, Christa Canter, Chanelle Conaway (Heart Award), Elizabeth Hinson (valedictorian), Richele Hurley (salutatorian), Amani Roy and CinSere Turner (Persistence Award).

Six of our graduates will stay with us — where they started as care assistants or in housekeeping — with the valedictorian joining the team at Walter Reed.

“I want to thank you,” instructor Nora Gillespie told the class. “Nothing about this is easy. You pulled together as a team and you have all the tools, heart and compassion.”

We are so proud to have such dedicated nurse aides joining our team! The program also covers the cost of the state certification exam to be a CNA. The Peninsula apprenticeship class also graduated Friday, and you can read the whole story at https://vahs.com/vhs-adds-17-nurse-aides-to-roster-following-apprenticeship-graduations/

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States, observed on June 19. It signifies when word of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas, in 1865 - more than two years after President Lincoln signed it into law.
