WPHA's President, Geeta Wadhwani, joined a broad coalition of agriculture, business, and hunger relief organizations at a press conference in Madison yesterday calling on state lawmakers to act swiftly to protect FoodShare. Recent federal changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have shifted 75 percent of administrative costs to states, creating a $69.2 million funding need for Wisconsin. Without legislative action before the end of the session, the state could face penalties of up to $205 million and risk disruptions to benefits.
Speakers emphasized that FoodShare is both a critical tool in reducing hunger and a key economic driver for Wisconsin’s agricultural sector, with more than $1 billion in benefits redeemed annually at local grocery retailers. Of course, there is a strong connection between food security and public health, highlighting the importance of stable nutrition assistance programs to support healthy communities and strengthen Wisconsin’s food system.
