Mee Memorial Foundation

Mee Memorial Foundation The Foundation is a nonprofit organization that support the programs and services of the hospital. All contributions are valuable!

The Foundation operates independently, in the sense that we have our own focus and goals, but our main purpose is to ensure that our community has access to quality healthcare in this and future generations! Due to cuts in hospital funding on both state and federal levels over the years, many hospitals have struggled to secure financial support and turn to their foundations for assistance. The Foundation’s mission is to adequately “equip, modernize, update and make aesthetically pleasant, the hospital facilities.” We are invigorated by the desire to maintain and provide these locally relevant services! There are many areas the Foundation has helped and supported community healthcare and we’d love your help doing it! There are also many ways to get involved; overseeing donations, managing endowments and organizing capital campaigns. We also host special events and organize fundraising activities; these efforts serve us all! Funds raised in the past have helped the hospital in countless ways. Over the past 50 years, the total contribution for the betterment of the hospital is in the millions. The following has been purchased thought the Foundation’s effort:

OUTPATIENT DIALYSIS IN KING CITY
When your kidneys fail, they are no longer able to remove waste from your body or regulate nutrients. Dialysis essentially does the job of your kidneys for them. It is needed when your own kidneys can no longer take care of your body’s needs.
Dialysis at Mee Memorial Healthcare System is done in an outpatient dialysis center setting. Dialysis treatments take time and usually last between three to five hours. More at https://bit.ly/3CDjQYC

February is American Heart Month, which raises awareness about heart health and how people can lower their risk for heart disease. To help you follow a heart-healthy diet, here is a recipe that is low in sodium and saturated fat: Beef and Bean Sloppy Joes. This healthy copycat recipe trades beans for some of the meat to bump up the fiber by 7 grams. Less sugar and ketchup in this makeover saves 12 grams of added sugar. https://bit.ly/3G29tPx

I have been going to MMHS for 15 years and am a big supporter of local! Of course Mee is part of that.

I am pleased with the new staff; right now Dr. Pinto is one of my favorite providers. But everybody there is good and works hard to deliver. The services in ER, Radiology and the clinics in particular are so very important for our community — just having them here and so close is critical.

The healthcare provided by MMHS is so valuable to the community — it's huge. To have so many wonderful services available to members and to not have to drive to Salinas, Monterey or Paso Robles for basic care is a blessing. I rather stay local and support our clinics.

During COVID in particular, the vaccination clinics have been amazing and the organization really delivered excellent care.

I was part of the Hospital Board years ago and really liked being part of the organization. I find their work very valuable. I like to know what's going on and what my donations are being used for. I’m glad I'm part of a generous, giving community.

Mee Foundation Board Member Profile
Nick Alatorre is Information Technology Manager/Security Officer at Mee Memorial Healthcare System and is a current member and former President of the Foundation Board. Nick joined the board because he saw an opportunity to help the hospital.

“As a long-term employee, I welcomed the opportunity to see and help the organization from a different point of view,” he says. “Seeing the bigger picture, the organizational needs, and coming up with ways to fund them has been rewarding.”

Nick has worked in various roles in IT at the hospital since 2002, and as a native of King City, has been a patient and visited the hospital often to see family members, one of the reasons the hospital is important to him.

“In my time here, I’ve seen many changes, and challenges, but each time we’ve been able to band together, not only as an organization, but as a community,” he says. “It has been inspiring to see the community support for some of the larger projects, the Al and Donna Oliveira Clinic expansion, laparoscopic surgery equipment, mammography, to name a few.”

Nick grew up in King City, and graduated from King City High School in 2000, so he’s very familiar with the hospital, but never thought he’d be working at Mee Memorial when he “grew up.”

“Now, all three of my children were born here, and have received their care here, including similar ER visits as I had. It’s come full circle,” he says. “I realize just how fortunate we are to have this hospital here in our town, and not have to drive an hour for care. It’s for those reasons I take pride in my work here, and with being a member of the Foundation Board, in order to continue to help the Hospital — and clinics — provide services for generations to come.”

(Mee)t the Team: Dr. Robert Valladares, Chief Medical Officer
Like many teenagers growing up in Simi Valley, CA, Dr. Valladares (Dr. V, for short) found himself working on cars and taking a few community college courses while figuring out his future. A friend training to be a firefighter suggested he might like the program and be good at it. “Out of curiosity, I started taking EMT training courses and, as part of the training, I started volunteering at local medical clinics.” Because he spoke fluent Spanish, he ended up being the “go to” translator for many physicians. This was his first experience working alongside doctors, in a very innovative, forward-thinking environment. And the impact stuck.

“We were taking care of those who didn’t have resources, insurance, or really much at all …nowhere to go, no work.” This inspired him to set the lofty goal of preparing for medical school. “I started a Pre-Health major at Westmont College in Santa Barbara and spent my spring breaks in Ensenada, Mexico with other doctors and dentists providing free care to those in need. That was the fuel that drove me and provided the rigor to finish my studies and ultimately be accepted to Stanford Medical School.”

These experiences lead Dr. V. to a develop his “mission-driven” method of recruiting new talent. “My theory is that those with a mission-based world view come to us with the resolve, skill set and tenacity we are looking for at MMHS. The caliber of medical professionals we’ve been able to attract is incredible. We’ve got a whole new generation of those dedicated to giving back to the community. This area was founded by local, hardworking, generous people, and an outpouring of resources, volunteer hours and commitment. We’re starting to see a whole new generation of committed professionals with the old-fashioned ideal; that of serving a greater good.”

Allow your memories to bloom!
Support the Mee Memorial Foundation while memorializing someone or something close to your heart. Purchase a “forever rose,” a memorial brick or bench for someone you love to be located along walking path in the Rose Garden or to be located in our newly planned Memorial Brick Garden in the hospital courtyard. These donations represent a “forever purchase;” your loved one’s name will live on forever in the garden.

The garden is funded entirely by donations, with gifts to the garden recognized by the Foundation (unless anonymity is requested). The Foundation staff works together with volunteers to take care of the roses and tend the garden, which is open to the public. More at https://bit.ly/3xJMfKA
