What is Gliding? 🗣

💡 Gliding is a common phonological process where a liquid (/r/, /l/) is replaced with a glide (/w/, /j/) This phonological process is typically eliminated by around the age of 6-7. 💡

▪️ It's important to note that Gliding is a very common process in children, and it often corrects itself as the child grows older. However, if your child is experiencing Gliding beyond the age of 7, it might be a good idea to contact a speech language pathologist for an evaluation! ✨

✦ Making requests to encourage language ✦

Here are ways to encourage making a request with your child:

✽ Put toys in a clear but closed box so they can see it
✽ Provide the choice of two - "Do you want the cube or duck?"
✽ Give a challenging but fun toy that they need to request your help with
✽ Put a preferred object in sight but out of reach - "Truck. There's your truck."
✽ Give a closed snack - "open please."
✽ Do a task halfway and let them catch you doing something silly like putting one shoe on, giving them an empty water bottle, bath but no water... etc.

This speech sound development chart is a good place to start to help track your child’s speech development. If your child isn’t correctly saying speech sounds at the ages specified below and you are concerned about their speech, you might want to consider speech therapy!

Remember - These speech sound milestones are to be used as a general guide to help you determine if your child’s speech is developing appropriately. These norms are only one piece of the puzzle in determining if a child’s speech is delayed and if they may benefit from speech therapy. These are not set-in-stone “cut-off” ages for when your child should be perfectly saying each speech sound in conversation ✨🗣

June is Aphasia Awareness Month 🧠

Aphasia Awareness Month aims to increase public awareness about aphasia and to recognize the people living with it or caring for people with it. Typically occurring after a brain injury — like stroke, a tumor, or an infection — aphasia is an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write.

Putting away/cleaning up toys is a great way to take a daily routine and turn it into an opportunity to promote speech and language skills!

Putting away/cleaning up toys can target:

• Producing verbs
• Labeling nouns
• Producing sounds
• Following directions
• Expanding phrases
• Labeling prepositions

When implementing these, make sure to model each one, so your child can see how to do each strategy! ✨

If your child doesn't enjoy putting toys away or cleaning up, you can try:

• Turning it into a race, pretending the toys are going to sleep, have toys walk/dance/hop/run to the area or container you're putting it away in, or singing the "cleanup" song 💡
