Meet Gretchen and Bill Roop! They are our featured King Volunteers of the Month! If you ask them, they say they it feels like they’ve been volunteering all of their lives! They are new volunteers at King and live 20 minutes away in Wild Rose, WI. They met in an online Hebrew class and married 3 months after meeting in person. Bill has two daughters. The oldest lives in Belgium and the youngest lives in Austin, Texas. Bill loves to write, and Gretchen loves to cook and bake. They both are Air Force Veterans. Bill retired from his job as a truck driver delivering chemicals in Houston.

Gretchen quit her job as a contractor to become a missionary at a children’s home in Guatemala. Bill and Gretchen were informed of volunteer opportunities at their American Legion post meeting. Bill was a hospice volunteer in Houston for 12 years. Gretchen has volunteered at many church and civic organizations. They both volunteer at a local food pantry and as hospice volunteers.

They feel volunteering at King is a chance to give back to those who have given so much. Gretchen feels, “every hour we share, whether through conversation, a shared meal or help with an activity is an act of gratitude that brings comfort and companionship to our Veterans and their spouses.” If you see them on our campus at King, please say hello!

Here are some pictures from our members on the Spooky Scenic Ride through the “haunted hollow” trail in Weyauwega. They took a ride on the King Koach with members from Moses as they were “spooked” on the ride through the trail…..the live characters commandeered the bus…Did they survive??…Yes, all the members made it back to the Veterans Home safe and sound!! Whew!

Thank you to the cast of characters at the Haunted Hollow for a “spooktacular” time. Happy Halloween everyone!

We held our annual King Volunteer Appreciation picnic on September 25th, 2025. We had 65 volunteers in attendance on a beautiful warm day. Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary James Bond attended, addressed, and personally thanked all the volunteers. He also presented a special proclamation to volunteer Dan Naylor in recognition of his numerous volunteer hours and dedication to our members.

Volunteer Gary Mader was also recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution Stevens Point Chapter for his over 23,000 lifetime volunteer hours to our Home. They presented him with a beautifully made 'Quilt of Valor.'

We are so grateful to all who generously donate, volunteer, and give back to our members at King!
