🐾Meet our new volunteer pet therapy team!!! 🐾

Hello, my name is Morey Benson, and this is therapy dog Lily. I have been volunteering for a total of 18 years, and I started at the King Veterans Home two months ago. I live with my wife of 19 years, Melissa, in Wi******er, WI, about 30 miles away.

We have two Shih Tzu dogs, Lily, 9 years old, and Sascha, 7 years old. We enjoy boating on the local lakes and rivers, driving our classic cars, visiting family and friends, and vacationing in Minocqua each summer. I have worked in sales, managed a parts department, and am currently inspecting trucks for Oshkosh Corp.

My therapy dog, Lily, brought me to King to have a greater impact. My wife, Melissa, and I have been taking Lily to the Winnebago Mental Health and Park View Center in Oshkosh for eight years, and all the staff members love Lily and look forward to her visits. She is well-known for her long eyelashes.

I enjoy being active in my church and community. I have served in various positions at my church for the past 18 years. I joined the Medina-Readfield Lions Club five years ago and am currently serving as the club president. I enjoy meeting new people and having them pet and interact with my dog. I am always amazed at what happens when I bring my little dog into someone’s room, seeing the huge impact she has on them.

🚶🏻‍♀️🚶🏽‍♂️🚶🏾‍♀️Calling All Walkers!!!🚶🚶🏽‍♀️🚶🏿‍♂

As the winter temperatures and snow set in here in Wisconsin, King is opening its underground tunnels to the community for exercise and walking through these cold months.

Visitors interested in traveling the tunnels will notice signs at building entrances reminding them to check in at the kiosk and wear a visitor sticker before beginning their walk.

Those exploring the tunnels will discover a variety of displays along the way, including artwork from local schools, plaques commemorating Honor Flights, and park benches where walkers can pause and rest.

If you are down in the tunnels, be certain to listen for the horns of motorized delivery carts that move between buildings.

This month we are pleased to shine a spotlight on Joni Steingraber, the new Commandant at Wisconsin Veterans Home at King! Joni has worked at King since June 2025 and previously was the Assistant Administrator/Executive Director.

With a career entirely in long term care, Joni brings experience as a Nursing Assistant, LPN, RN, Nursing Home Administrator, and seven years as a State Surveyor with Wisconsin’s Division of Quality Assurance.

For Joni, she says the most rewarding part of her role is working directly with members to make their lives better, and doing it alongside wonderful, supportive professionals who create a caring environment for veterans every day.

Joni is a proud military mom – her son is a Chief Warrant Officer in the U. S. Marines whose service includes a wartime deployment in Iraq.

Outside of work, Joni leads a local 4-H club, sings in her church’s choir, enjoys reading and crocheting and loves horseback riding including on a recent trip with daughter through the rolling hills and pastures of Ireland.

Please join us in welcoming her as our new Commandant at our veterans home at King!

Here are some pictures of our Veterans Day Ball from earlier this week at King! Members from Ainsworth and Moses Halls were serenaded by the Charlie Justman Band. Lots of smiles and toes were tapping!

We want to give a huge shout out to our amazing Dietary Department for putting this delicious spread of food together which included some hand-dipped red-white and blue strawberries, mini-cheesecakes, savory snacks, and more for our members for Veterans Day!! Kudos to our Activities staff for making this Veterans Day one to remember! ⭐🇺🇸
