⚠️🚶‍♂️Winter Tunnel Walking at King – Please Follow These Safety Guidelines ⚠️🚶‍♂️

For the safety of residents, staff, and visitors, we ask that the public follow these rules when using the Tunnels at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King:

• ENTER TUNNELS ONLY THROUGH THE MARDEN CENTER , MOSES HALL, OR AINSWORTH HALL. Tunnels are open for public walking only during posted hours (8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.).

• REVIEW AND FOLLOW ALL RULES POSTED AT KIOSKS.

• WALKING ONLY – NO RUNNING. Do not open or pass through closed doors; closed doors are off-limits for safety reasons.

• NO PETS ALLOWED UNLESS APPROVED. Housekeeping staff have found pet waste in the tunnels, which creates infection control concerns.

• YIELD THE RIGHT OF WAY TO ALL VEHICLES – LOOK OUT FOR TUGGERS. “Tuggers” (train-like conveyances) are used to transport residents and supplies and must remain on schedule. Follow posted tugger traffic patterns, marked by lime-green lines and signage, and do not be alarmed by honks or beeps.

We are pleased that so many people are enjoying exercise indoors during the winter and want to continue offering the tunnels as a shared community space. The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King is a working campus where our member’s health, safety and comfort are the top priority.

PLEASE NOTE: The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King reserves the right to discontinue public tunnel access if safety or hygiene concerns arise. We hope to continue this winter tradition and appreciate everyone’s cooperation in following these guidelines. Thank you!

This month, we are proud to highlight our colleague Jeane Pattillo as she prepares to retire from the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs in February and to celebrate her dedicated career at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King!

Jeane began her career at King twenty years ago (January 2006) and has served in numerous member support and administrative roles. She currently serves as the Tour Coordinator/Office Operations Associate for the Admissions Department, welcoming countless veterans, families, and visitors to the Veterans Home.
For Jeane, the most rewarding part of her work at King has always been the opportunity to interact with the many people she meets and communicates with throughout the day.

While not a veteran herself, Jeane has had numerous family members serve in the military - her grandfather fought at the Battle of the Bulge win World War II, and her father served in the Army with assignments in Lebanon and Germany.
Outside of work, Jeane enjoys camping with her husband, singing and playing guitar on my church’s worship team, and serving as a volunteer chaplain at the King Veterans Home.

As she embarks on this next chapter of her life, Jeane leaves us with some sage advice for new employees. “Go to work with a smile and always find joy in the journey,” says Jeane.

Please join us in thanking Jeane for her years of dedication to our Homes' members and in wishing her the very best in retirement!

Bowling Returns to King! 🎳🌟After almost a year, the bowling alley in the Marden Memorial Center is now open! Renovations to repair water damage to the alley were completed in December 2025, and regularly scheduled bowling sessions resumed after Christmas. Ainsworth Hall members bowl on most Mondays, while members from Moses Hall hit the lanes on Wednesdays.

On a recent Monday, members from Ainsworth Hall took to the lanes. Using bowling ball ramps and assisted by volunteers Steve, Twiggy and Bennet, members scored countless strikes, spares, smiles, and cheers.

This month, we’re proud to welcome Shelley Dern as the new Health Services Nursing Coordinator for the Wisconsin Veterans Homes at Chippewa Falls, King, and Union Grove! She holds a master’s degree in nursing (MSN) and brings 4 decades of healthcare experience to our Homes.

For Shelley, the most rewarding part of her career has always been the human connection and profound yet straightforward moments, from seeing a smile to hearing a patient say, “I am so glad you are taking care of me today.”

Her experience as a regional nurse, nursing home administrator, director of nursing, nursing instructor, and certified legal nursing consultant brings another layer of expertise to our organization. This position is a new role for WDVA, and she will work to elevate our care delivery processes.

Through her experience working with patients, Shelley says it has helped her become an effective advocate for their needs. She shares that it is now a privilege to give back and provide care for our members who have put their lives on the line for our country.

While not a veteran herself, Shelley has deep military ties. For nearly two decades, she was the spouse of an Air Force service member whose service included an overseas assignment to Hahn Air Base in Germany. While living in Germany, Shelley founded “Stripes and Patches to Go,” a sewing business that supported the MWR Recreation Department at Hahn Air Base by sewing military stripes and patches.
Other members of her family with military service include her father (Air Force), brother (Army), three uncles, and her son-in-law, who is in the Army National Guard and was recently deployed overseas.

Shelley is currently serving as the acting director of nursing for our veterans home in Union Grove until the ideal candidate is hired. In this new role, she will onboard nursing supervisors and maintain continuity across campuses through policy, audits, mock surveys, and more.

Please join us in welcoming Shelly to our WDVA team!
